I'm trying to help a friend pick a new scope to replace the crappy 2-7x Tasco on his BLR in 308. Here's the criteria:

- minimum 1.25-2x
-maximum 6-8x
-minimum 32mm objective lens
-maximum 20oz
-illuminated reticle
-<$1000 CAD before tax
-ideally a German style or duplex reticle (but can compromise on this as long as it's not too cluttered)

All I can find that's currently in production meets this criteria is the Vortex Viper HD 2-10x42. Is there anything else I'm missing?

Well,
I own two of those.
They are more than 8x but i can tell you they are great scopes.
Too bad the tariffs have driven vortex prices up but in my opinion (the vortex poopers and leupy boosters will b*tch) its about as good a scope as anyone needs and a superior reticle to most.

The firedot is awesome !

Just wish it was subtended it standard moa hashies instead of the BDC.

One scope i used to have a few of and really liked was the redfield 2-7 but no illumination.

Also cud look at the strike eagle 1-8x24.
Or the i-6 with sfp reticle. Less light but pretty good. Ran the 1-8x on my ranch in 223.

Good luck!

How do you find the push button for the illumination on the Vortex 2-10? Intuitive or a PITA? Good low light performance?

I'd consider something from the Vector Optics Continental line, here's a 1-8 with an fiber illuminated german #4 hybrid reticle with some holdover marks, well below a grand. They offer regular illuminated as well and German #4 style reticles without the holdover marks

The 1-6 also an option at around $500.00 vs $650.00 for the 1-8

Check out some reviews on youtube,

Just realized I missed your 32mm min obj and max magnification limits.... and the 2-16 is 3.7 oz's over your weight limit, likely due to the side parallax adjustment.

:)

I kinda like this, should fit and work great on my Rossi R95 45-70

Its a light “click” on and a 5second (or so) hold to turn off.

Very simple.

Adjusting brightness is also easy.

Its quite bright in my opinion.
As bright or brighter than a similar VX3HD i used to own.

With the exception of the illuminated reticle, that sounds like a job that the Leupold VX3 2.5-8x was made for. The bonus is that, for a small fee, you can get any reticle swapped in by sending the scope to Korth, outside of Calgary. Add in the fact that the lifetime warranty is transferrable and that you don't have to send it back to the States to get it fixed...you're probably smart to search one up on the EE and buy it second hand. Most people will never wear out a scope, so buy with confidence.

An illuminated reticle sounds like a great idea, but in reality it is just adding complexity and weight that you most likely won't use.

There was a pretty good deal for one on the EE recently, not sure if it's still there... I thought about linking it for the OP but decided it was likely outside of his set parameters.

These days I prefer having the option to illuminate and don't mind if it adds a little weight and complexity... etched reticles work fine without batteries so there is not much to lose if you leave it on or forget to change a battery every couple years or for some reason the weight of a spare battery is more then you want to bear. Many newer optics have "shake awake" features so the optic an just be left on and will self ignite with movement and then go back to sleep when inactive.

I have one with a German #1 that I picked up used for $450 on here. Felt like I stole it!
