Hunting scopes in the 1.25-2x to 6-8x range.

I use a bushnell forge 1-8x32 illuminated g4 and love it. Im not sure of the weight though. It kinda feels like a bit of a brick. Still kightr than my nightforce but the glass is almost as good

German #4 reticle with illuminated dot.
Good scope, but you'll have to buy one from Europe.

With the exception of the illuminated reticle, that sounds like a job that the Leupold VX3 2.5-8x was made for. The bonus is that, for a small fee, you can get any reticle swapped in by sending the scope to Korth, outside of Calgary. Add in the fact that the lifetime warranty is transferrable and that you don't have to send it back to the States to get it fixed...you're probably smart to search one up on the EE and buy it second hand. Most people will never wear out a scope, so buy with confidence.

An illuminated reticle sounds like a great idea, but in reality it is just adding complexity and weight that you most likely won't use.
Well, Lots of options out there and lots of opinion too.
IMO, the fire-dot reticle in the Vortex Viper HD line is an excellent feature and I use it ALL the time.
The only exception is bright sunlight and I have yet to point it at a deer in bright sunlight.
It's not the whole reticle, just a wee dot in the middle and it definitely adds clarity against the body of a deer, particularly in wet, low light.

My wife used it on her deer this year and relaxed visibly when I clicked the dot on.
Some Leupold scopes have fire-dots too but I just don't own any of those anymore.
