I was teaching a firearms class recently and one of the students tried to correct me during the section on ballistics. He was told by his father that you had to aim high when shooting uphill... It took me the better part of half an hour to make this youngster realize that physics and gravity are actually science and that his father was wrong. (I actually got a phone call from his father asking what the heck I was talking about!):runaway:
I hear these well worn myths and misconceptions all the time... like the guy in the gunstore telling me that you should never hunt over a gut pile, while he was buying doe in heat scent.:p
What are some of your favorite Hunting/Shooting Myths and Misconceptions. Lets clear the air on the bafflegarb and twaddle that is far too prevalent in our sport.:)

How about "deer don't move in the rain?" "They'll be curled up under a pine tree tday, and you'll have to boot 'em right in the ass to move 'em."

Nothing is further from the truth of course, it's just an excuse for lazy hunters to stay dry.

The longer the barrel, the more accurate the gun (even with a scope).

The notion here has nothing to do with sight radius with iron sights, but that the bullet has more time to "stabilize" in a straight line in the bore.

I will grant that a 26" barrel places you 2" closer to the target than a 24", so maybe it's true!

My personal favourite is the one that says long bbl shotguns have more "reach". Muhammad Ali had "reach"

Ya, and a .308 isn't powerful enough to shoot at a 1,000 yards.
How about this one.
"Heavy bullets don't shoot as far as light ones"!

big bullets do mess up your deer or moose a lot more than you think
I found this quote on another recent thread, which is another common misconception.

Big bullets do not cause meat damage, high velocity does.
.

My "other" personal favourite misconception is that washing the deer carcass with cold, clean water is somehow bad. :D

You will ruin your shotgun if you shoot slugs through a full choke. There is a PAL instructor around who STILL tells his students that.
