I am looking to get a HUNTING shotgun. My price limit is about $500. I am looking at either the Mossberg 500 or Remington 870.....the models with the 28" vent-rib barrel. I plan this to be my main shooter (besides my .22). I don't want any "barrel package" deals as I will worry about other barrels later. I plan to use this for skeet/trap, uplanding hunting, deer, waterfowl....pretty much everything so I plan do grab a few choke tubes as well. If there is another pump action shotgun in my price range that you think is better please say so.

Thanks, ranger

I think you can get a combo package in both brands for around $500.
IMO the major diff is the placement of the safety. up to you to decide what you like baet.
both are economical dependable shotguns.
I prefer the remmy

I don't know anything about the Mossberg but I've owned several 870's and I can't recommend them highly enough!
For everything I use a shotgun for, its the perfect scatter gun.

I've got both and my 870 stays at home in the safe while my mossberg is out playing in the field. Position of both the safety and action release are more convenient for me. Also, I find my mossberg a lot more reliable than my 870. Just my opinion and experience.

I voted other, get a used Browning BPs or Benelli Nova, cause they are better quality than either the Mossberg or the Remington. I've owned all four and a Winchester 1300 and a Browning BPS are the only Pump guns residing in my safe at present.

The Ithaca 37, Browning BPS and Winchester 1300/SXP have smoother actions than the Remington and Mossberg. The Ithaca and Winchester are also significantly lighter in weight.

the mossberg is way less prone to rusting, 870's have a finish that is very prone to rust..

either than that i have both, i like the safety and slide release on the mossy better, and find the slide easyer to rack as well. i still like my 870 though (mainly because its got an 8.5" barrel)

You absolutely have to try/buy/own a Baikal MP-153. Anyone who mocks it because it is Russian doesn't know any better; I take birds down without effort using typical (ie: cheap) steel shot) at 30 meters all the time. It's a dream to fire, cycles faster than you can pull the trigger, and is often available on the EE for around the $400 price point.

Baikal MP-153; It's the perfect shotgun for ducks, and upland game bird. Haven't used it with Deer, but pull the trigger on a 3 1/2" slug and something tells me one will go down. That's my reason...

Let us know what you choose in the end!

Cheers,

CE

Oh, and as for durability; The Baikal is the typical Russian... Totally up for any punishment you can dish out. Hardened, chrome lined barrel, beautiful workmanship where it counts and the synthetic stock is great. The wood's fine, and if you're looking for a deal you'll probably get a better price with wood, but I prefer the synthetic.

Good luck!

One thing I should point out is looks. I want a nicely looking gun but I am gonna use this gun probably 2-3 times a week......so nicks and all are GOING to happen. I'd rather have a good functing gun then a super pretty one with a nice finish(usually adds $ too!) and I am too scared to ruin so it becomes a safe queen. This gun will be down in the mud, snow, ect.

Im going to say Mossberg 500. less expensive, works great, tang safety is nice. I got mine brand new with 28" barrel, wood stock and 3 chokes for 300$. I love my 500. Lots of aftermarket chokes and barrels. You cant go wrong with the remington though.
