I googled and tried talking to the retard at a local outdoor shop but I am still not certain what is needed for grouse and other small game in Alberta. I know squirrels can't be shot but are there seasons for grouse or special licensing requirements? I assume rabbits are fair to shoot year round...?

Rabbits are fair game all year round, but there is a season for grouse. For grouse you'd need your wildlife certificate and a game bird license, plus check the season dates for where you want to hunt.

For game birds like grouse, if you're using a shotgun it may only hold two in the magazine + one in the chamber here in Alberta too.
You'll need to get the WIN card too before you'll be allowed to purchase the necessary wildlife certificate & game bird licence. The game bird licence does not include pheasant, turkey or waterfowl either.
No hunting licence needed for rabbit.
Your best bet when would be to pick up a copy of the hunting regs rather than just take everyone's word on the internet.

Its all been said up above.

Except maybe that you are now allowed to "hunt but not trap" squirrels on privately owned land in Alberta.

On another note, cold wet weather in the spring when grouse chicks are small has a real impact on their survival. I hope they did well enough this year.

I love hunting and eating ruffed grouse but we have had such low number for some time now.
