Hunting to feed RAW?

yep....can't just feed meat but sure can feed higher percentage.

you guy's ever wonder what the eskimos fed there teams???? mostly meat.

Late season muley is hardly fit for dogs to eat..

WTF? What would be the point of doing this, other than ruining meat?

Editing to add: Apparently this is up for debate on whether it's a wise thing to do. http://www.petplace.com/dogs/raw-meat-debate-should-you-feed-it-to-your-dog/page1.aspx

I read your article...can't help but see some bias.

In no way does eukanuba insure that a individual dog gets a balanced meal...science or not. Just look at the chronic obesity in pets they are fed to death.
my ideal is a combination of some raw scraps, some leftovers and some kibble..

the fact that many of them spoiled well fed eukanuba eating dogs will sneak down to a horse corral and eat turds, catch a mouse, or eat up the trimmed frog and clippings from a horse inandated with thrush bacteria and do it again and again. Most of the "science" is FOS.

Its not all that uncommon, the local butcher's here have an area strictly for raw pet foods, or go to the market and take a look at what the raw meat bones are selling for.

I don't hunt currently as my wife won't eat wild meat (yet), but she is interested if it meant we could feed the dog, as there's nothing more natural.

Hey, Does anyone on here hunt to feed their dogs RAW (raw meat, whole carcus?) If so what do you hunt/feed?
I've considered it but there is no reliable food source due to the short open seasons. I guess if one lived up north and got a moose and a couple of deer each year, one could manage to feed a dog for a year if he froze the meat.

there is a houndsman out here that raises plott hounds and all he feeds them is raw meat, gets most of it from the surounding farmers, old cows, goats etc, they all seem to be living healthy and fine lives

I use ground Venison cooked for my beagles.

2/3 Venison ground
1/3 Pork Shoulder Skin on ground

Equal Parts Brown or whole Grain Rice, Meat, Mixed Frozen Vegetables.
Cook all ingredients separately, mix and bag.
Stored in Sandwich size Freezer Bags.
Takes a couple hours to make up 2 months worth.

They get 50/50 Science Diet Kibble and Venison meal with some Omega Oils Added.
If I went off Kibble entirely I would add some Vitamins etc. from the vet.

That wouldn't leave me much venison though so they have to share.

We started this after we had a scare with the tainted wet food.
Luckily we only ever added a spoonful to the dry food at a time.
We could have lost our dogs. They had melamine in their Urine and had issues for a few months.
With the Liberal tag numbers around here, I can spare a few deer to keep my dogs healthy.

All my dog eats is Raw meat and Raw veggies. Full of wayyy more nutrition than kibble, the bone is ground in with the meat. Hell we eve feed her ground up tripe(green tripe).
If you are going to feed your dog raw game, just make sure to watch them, and see if anything funny happens. If something seems amiss straight to the vet.
Dogs are just domesticated wolves, raw meat and bones are good for them.

Also, my dog got VERY sick from that melanine thing, just from eating treats!

My dogs only get what is left over once I have cut and packaged everything. There is usually some meat on bones still. I also give them the fat usually helps them in the winter.

At the risk of annoying others.....most Trappers around here have dogs (big buggers) and feed the 'roo tails and the occasional under sized carcase to their animals, the trick is to leave the hide on the tail as this ensures that the dog gets a good clean out for his gut and intestines (roughage), the dog also benefits from the cleaning and massaging of his teeth and gums....a side benefit is the dog always starts from the open end which ensures that there is no fly blown meat in the yard (the rest is conveniently packaged), the same applies to rabbit carcases....leave the hide and the head on (for the same reasons) after inspecting for hydatids and such.
Too much meat makes the dog sh!t stink and too much bone makes the sh!t hard and white....likewise too much dog nuts and processed food makes the faeces large, soft and generally unpleasant (makes a small dog turd look like a log).
The gentleman who suggested a broad selection of scraps, meat and such (and for working dogs, plenty of carbohydrates such as pasta and rice), supplemented by a modicum of dry food is on the right track.
Of course we could be wrong.

I feed my dog pig necks and chick carcasses. Lots of meat still left on the bone for the necks, plus 59 cents/lbs at the butcher.

Vets have tried very hard, but unable to find anything wrong with my dog...or cats for that matter.

They still eat dry food once in a while, when I'm lazy and they run out of meat.

we've feed our dogs raw meats. they love it! we toss them our fruits & veggie ends. they love it! once my brother and I start hunting, we'll ensure that there's no wasted anything (except maybe organ means, being they seem to be too rich for 'em and they puke it up after eating). the butcher we'll be going to already provides a mixture for purchase, should you wish to buy it from him, otherwise we grab regular hamburger and mix in cheap coleslaw plus other things (including time to time a powdered suppliment).

so this is something we'll be doing.

I feed and have fed my dogs raw meat whenever available. I live in a rural area so sometimes I'll get a cow that is down for one reson or other. as long as it hasn't been on antibiotics I'll bone and grind the whole thing. usually once or twice a year I'll get a road killed deer.
My dogs do much better on meat diet than on the commercial dry diet. I always have fed quality commercial foods, but they do better on the raw meat.

I have read warnings many times about giving dogs bones. I have been giving my dogs bones for over 50 years. I make sure they are large hard leg or knuckle bones from beef. Never had a problem. and I've had some very large dogs, with very strong jaws.

Puppies get pressure cooked chicken, bones and all and cooked rice.
