I would like to plan a few upland or migratory hunting trips over the next few years and I am looking for some ideas. For 2018 I will be spending a week in southern Alberta for huns and sharpies, booked for the third hunt in Pelee (now three days) for pheasants and will do a few north of the GTA migratory hunts for ducks and geese. I am curious as to what some other good options are. A few consideration points; 1) I am an Ontario resident so that is a consideration for licensing. 2) Access to land 3) Preference is for non-guided, but decoys for migratory become an issue if it is not within driving distance. 4) Probably a max of a one week trip 5) Group would consist of three or four guys and dog(s) 6) I am not talking about high volume shooting in Argentina or hunting at an Orivis approved lodge. I would love to, but they are not in my budget. 7) Upland is the preference

Anyhow, I would be great to hear what everyone else is doing or wants to do. I figure I may as well get out and enjoy some of these experiences while I can.

One thing I have not done yet but intend to (hard to do it all asap) is hunt Lake of the Woods for ducks. I have access to a modern 4 bedroom cottage and boat there in a very isolated part of the lake. Cottage is boat access only. Very close to lots of quiet back bays filled with wild rice. Lots of ruffs in the vicinity as well.

Three great hunts already that I would definitely enjoy! Hopefully others can comment on ideas for Quebec or the East Coast.

Bob, I am with you and wish there was a way to slow down the clock.

I have another I want to do..... for ruffed grouse up in the little finger of NB that runs between Quebec and Maine. Found a great B & B to stay up there and looks like the ruff hunting would have to be good.

I've looked at upland in Quebec and the Maritimes and from what I could find, non residents of the province need to use the services of an outfitter or guide, making it tougher to freelance or go economy compared to Ontario or the West.
In my limited experience travelling to upland hunt, going to a new place it takes at least one trip to get the lay of the land and locate birds if you're going in blind.
Depending on how long have for your trip it can be worth hiring a local guide and paying for that local knowledge vs not getting into birds on a long anticipated trip.

try BC! LOTS of Crown land, and a decent variety of upland birds to chase.

Pheasant, quail & huns are likely just to frustrate (they run all around the vineyards, orchards and Indian reserves where hunting is ... unlikely) but you can find public land to hunt chukars (the only place in Canada to hunt wild ones!) and there are LOTS of Sooty/Dusky (aka Blue) Grouse, Spruce (and Franklin's), Ruffies, Sharp-tails and ptarmigan... also turkeys, but you have those out in Ontario I suppose.

Stay a while and shoot some birds! The season starts early. If you do plan a trip, cast about for some suggestions first.
