Hunting/Varminting with black rifles

Anyone else go hunting/varminting with their black rifles? Did you find them better or worse than bolt-guns?

What gun were you packing? Because that gopher looked like he was pretty well armed when you dropped him ;)
 
Holy crap! Awesome idea. .223 is a little pricier than .22lr, but I just may do that as well. What about sights? That Mepro looks like it'd be a biatch to aim accurately. How close could you get? You got me thinking how I'm gonna mount my bushnell 3-9X50mm scope on my XCR.

Again, awesome idea. WOOT!
 
The Tavor is a great varminter, the Mepro is not. When looking through that sight everything is discolored, its kinda tough to tell the difference between a clump of dead grass and a gopher. That and the red-dot covering up the entire gopher really make this optic ill suited for the task. It probably works great on palestinians, but not these little guys ;). FWIW I just got a falcon menace scope that I'm going to put on it and give that a try.

Where did you get a rail to mount the scope?
 
My buddy and I varmit all the time with our black guns. He runs a Swissarms or Rodarm M96, I pack an AR180B, CZ, XCR, or what ever else I have on hand.

What load are you using? Every gopher I've tagged with .223 has exploded.

Lol, yes they do tend to either atomize or turn into acrobats. I was just using 55gn AE that day (one of the little buggers got a double dose when the gun slam fired). I going to mix up some test loads in the 77gnSMK variety with magnum primers (hopefully this avoids doubles) to get this gun to its full potential. Glad to see others here like taking out these pests with something other than a 10/22 or bolt-gun.
 
Never really cared for it myself. Gophers can be very very small (this year's young are slightly bigger than mice by now), and many black guns generally don't have the accuracy to make consistent hits possible much past a hundred yards - especially with bulk ammo. Cleaning up your brass is also a PITA - whether you reload or not, some landowners may not care for you leaving big piles of spent brass around.
 
It depends on the black/green firearm. If it's reasonably accurate, than your expirience should be better than hunting with your "hunting gun". Black/green firearms are typically the best for relability, and ugly as sin, which is good because you don't have to worry about scratching that walnut stock :D

Heck yeah I hunt with my black guns! :D
I sink too much money into my "sniper" rigs to pay for hunting guns, so the only rifle i hunt with are heavy barrels, with the exception of my M305 "bush gun"
If I could hunt varmints with my AR's i would too!

I've got a varmint scope on my PE-90 target with the hopes of one day doing some Prairie dog shooting with it.

Now I just have to find some cheaper yet accurate ammo for it. The 63 grain swiss stuff is really expensive, and finding a reliable supply of decent 62 grain ammo is getting hard these days.
