This spring I gave up my backpack in favour of a vest when hunting turkeys. This fall I am thinking about giving up my backpack in favour of a vest.

I found that the vest organized my gear better than the pack I was using. I could get a different pack, but I was curious to hear if any of you have either gone the vest route or have given consideration to the idea.

never tried one for turkey, but for grouse & pheasant i use an upland bird vest, best $50 i ever spent. i can carry everything i need in it, plus it has a the large backpouch for carrying birds, meaning i don't have to drop them from my hand and get the gun up when the next one flushes.

Like many I used a backpack for turkey hunting. I bought a vest, tired it but didn't really care for it. So now I'm back to the backpack. Furthermore when I get really drousy the backpack can douple as a pillow. :D

I got a very good quality mesh "fishing" vest, with so many pockets I can't count them all, cheap from Wally World.

It started out as my "motorcycle" vest, for organising all my gear and making it easily accessible when motorcycle touring. GPS in one easily reached pocket, sunglasses in another, maps in another, power bar, flashlight, knife, mini binoculars, radio, etc, etc.

I've also worn it bicycle touring on my mountain bike.

Right now it is hanging in my closet, all the gear already packed and organised, waiting for my next outing.

PS: My "fishing" vest hangs right next to my "Tactical" range visit vest, the scary black one with all the magazine pockets, HOLSTERS, etc. I can wear my fishing vest to the mall, over top of my motorcycle or mountain bike costumes, without any weird looks.
BUT,
I would NOT want to try wearing my Tac vest to the mall ....
hoplophobes tend to panic easily, and bad things could happen, involving other gentlemen wearing similar vests misunderstanding my intentions.

Fishing vest = GOOD
TAC vest = SCARY!

I seriously doubt that :D

i have a quality pack as well as a quality turkey style vest...

the only time i use the backpack is when i am rabbit hunting and walking miles a day. the water bladder is nice to have and i dont really need to have things easily accessible like a vest permits.

turkey style vest is the best all around way of carrying gear.
