Hunting with a milsurp?

A friend of mine is getting into hunting, he shoulf have his lisence before next season. We're probably going to go out for deer, moose, and/or bear in Ontario this coming fall. He's planning on buying a K98k or a Yugo M48, as a do-all big game rifle, but if he can't get this before fall he's going to borrow a Lee-Enfield, as we both agree that either of these calibres are more than adequate for the animals we're after
Instead of taking my 7mm-08, I'm going to take one of my milsurps when I go with him, probably either my K98k or Lee-Enfield (maybe even my Carcano if we're going for dear).

My friend is trying to decide between decking out his Yugo in a sporter stock and using a non-permanent scope mount, or just using the military wood and probably just open sights.

I'm wondering which of your milsurp's you guys hunt with and how you carry them (full wood or sporter stock). Also, what loadd do you use in either 8mm or .303?

I don't use my milsurps. Way too heavy! If I had to I would take my Swedish Mauser M38. I found this rifle very reliable and accurate even with open sights.
Some milsurps shoot well beyond 300m only. Since you need a clean kill you may consider a cheap sporter with scope, rather than changing a nice milsurp. I have right now a good and cheap 98 sporter for sale:)

Other then the weight, I would have no reservations about hunting with either my M1 Garands, or US1917's. They are accurate enough, and I can shoot them well enough offhand, also the sights are nice and quick to acquire targets, any deer sized game under 150m would be in the roast pan.
I wouldn't take any of my mausers......I'm not fond of the notch/post for accuracy or speed.

I use my K98 sporter as well as my Swede 96/38 in full military stock. I've also got a old bubba'd P14 which I'll take out next season.

they work good, i've been using them exclusively the last 5 years, taken 7 deer in that time.

8mm is about the same power as 30-06. 303 is a little lower in power. For bear hunting, I would use the 8mm. Go with the full wood and iron sights for the challenge. You are there to bear/deer hunt not bear/deer shoot.

Nice pics Mig25. What sort of machliner is that last rifle.

Also, you're making me think about using my Mosin-Nagant M38.

the mannlicher is a steyr M95 modified in the 1930's to short rifle config. it is short, light, accurate, and powerful enough for most game.

Any Newfie will tell you the "ol' .303" (Enfield) is the best Moose rifle there is. I hunt with all my Milsurps including my No.4 MkI, Moison Nagant M44, and AG42B. I got My first Moose with the No.4 and my first Caribou with the AG42B.

And FULL WOOD all the way!

my first deer was taken with my lithgow enfield .303, 1 shot and down he went. I will be taking her out this season as i haven't had her out in a few years. I have no hesitations using this rifle for deer and moose.

My Mosin Nagant 91/30 has taken a bear and a deer.

I started with a Ross 303 that took my first deer and numerous others.

I made a bubba scout rifle out of Mosin parts and it has shot several bears.

I have a BSA "sporterized" U.S. M17 30-06 that has taken one bear,

My 300 Winchester started in this world as a P-14 WWI 303. It's done its share too.

My Swedes haven't been blooded.

milsurp for hunting

I have taken moose and deer with my No5Mk1, 215 grain bullets work wonders up close. The last big bull I got was about 60 yards and after the shot I could actually hear the air coming out of him.:D

shot my 1st deer with an ag42..........6.5mm range 75 m

my 1st moose was a bubba no. 4 mk 1... 303 brit, ...range 30 m
took another moose with my m-1 garand 2 shots @ 125 m.

lots of fun , other game with various sporting guns.

All of the animals I've put in the freezer (with one exception) have been done with milsurps. Weight is not an issue for me when hunting but reliability is.

Most of the guys I know either started with a milsurp or use nothing else. Both the 8mm Mauser and .303 Brit(180 SP's will do.), with proper hunting ammo, will drop any game in North America. So will the 6.5 x 55. The 7.62 x 39 when loaded properly is a deer cartridge only. It's too light for anything bigger.
If you're not reloading, you must try as many brands of ammo as you can to find the one or two that shoot best in your rifle. Then practice shooting with the stock sights, off hand, until you can hit a 9" pie plate at 100 yards every time. Then you're ready to hunt.
