I own a few hunting irons but there's something just plain wholesome about hunting deer with my #4.

That is unmitigated horsesh*t! The 6.5 x 55 is an extremely effective deer cartidge.

I used a P-14 last season and got a nice doe. The previous hunt I used a 1891 Argie infantry rifle in 7.65 Mauser. The 91 Argentine was not very handy. I have never been worried about weight, but it can come down to length for faster handling. I am not sure what I am going to use next year, maybe my 1905 Ross or my favorite a 1911 No1MkIII. I really like using the surplus rifles and most of them come in calibres that are good for deer sized animals. I also agree with our friend from the Rock, 303 is a great cartridge for moose, I have used 215 grain sabre tip, old CIL ammunition.
