Hunting with a Semi- auto Non restricted?

Just doing early research. I would like to learn from a mentor but I don't have one so the forums can be my mentor for know, as well as The Internet and YouTube vids lol

Be aware of magazine capacity...you are not allowed to even posses magazine for cetre-fire semi that hold more than 5 rounds...

Not true. It all depends what you're hunting, and where you're hunting. In Alberta I can use an MR1 with a 10 round pistol mag to hunt coyotes, gophers, crows, whatever. But for big game, I'm limited to a 5 round capacity of something .23 calibre or bigger.

Since he is in Ontario the specific "hunting" regulation regarding semi-automatic (non-restricted center fire rifles) reads:

"Under the Criminal Code of Canada you can not possess any clip/magazine that holds more than 5 shots for a semi-automatic center-fire non-restricted firearm unless that clip/magazine has been specifically exempted, pursuant to the Firearms Regulations."

So if a magazine IS exempted from the 5 round limit then it would be "legal" to hunt with it attached to your center-fire rifle. You just might save yourself a huge headache by sticking with a 5 round mag. While you might be "right" if you run into a CO while on a hunting trip who couldn't tell you what was approved or not you might find yourself missing a good chunk of your trip while things got sorted out.

Some internet info can be very misleading, research carefully. Check your provincial hunting regs.

X2.The Ontario hunting regulation on magazine limit is based on the Criminal. And I totally agreed with galamb although it is legal to use "Pistol mag (10 round capacity)" as per RCMP special bulletin No.72 but why risk spending time with an uninformed CO and ruin your day?

This actually happened and the owner did get the rifle back in the end and the officer involved apologize but guess no one want that hassle while you are out hunting.
