Hunting with an aimpoint

It seems like aimpoint or other red dot sights are popular for hunting in Europe, especially for driven game. I thought an aimpoint might be great for hunting deer in thick woods so I mounted an aimpoint 9000L 2 MOA sight in QD mounts on my 6.5x55. I have a Zeiss conquest 3-9x40 in a second set of rings so I can switch to a scope when hunting fields or open areas.

I have only used this combo at the range so far but I am headed out for deer tomorrow. I was wondering if anyone here uses red dot sights for hunting? So far I find target acquisition much faster than either a scope or iron sights. In addition I find it easier to keep my eye on the target during recoil and after the shot. With the 2MOA dot I am absolutely confidant in my shot placement out to at least 150m and with a bit more practice 200m should be reasonable on larger game. I can see why these sights are so popular for shooting moving targets.

I'm interested to hear othe peoples experiences.

I don't know how much technology has changed on those style sights in the past 25 years but I would not give the time of day for one from my experiences with them years ago. Have never looked at that option again. Have stuck to scopes.

Red dot sights have improved considerably in the past 25 years. The current generation of Aimpoints advertise battery life that can be measured in years and they're at least as durable as a good riflescope.

I heard you have to hit them in the eye, to take them down. ;) Ok, maybe 3" was a little harsh, but if you can't hit a dinner plate, you probably shouldn't shoot it. How's that?

I thought we only had to hit something 10x10' and say, "gud nuff".

Good advice. The max distance should be being able to hit a kill zone on the intended target reliably and within the performance of the load you are using. I can hit our 300m gong pretty consistantly with my 1894 in 44mag. But I certainly don't think the round has enough oomph to take game cleanly at that range.

I use a red dot on my Compact 10/22 for grouse and rabbits. Works great at the close shots for these critters. I have used it a 100 yard shots at clay pigeons at the range.

i had a red dot on my my ruger deefield. Was confident to 100 yard which i felt was the outer end of the round. Only took it off because i couldn't get a good cheek weld as i had to have high rings for the case to clear it when ejected. I shot my best buck so far with that setup.
