anyone ever hunt whitetail deer with an sks?
i only have 2 rifles right now, an sks and an m305/m14 (i mostly have shotguns and handguns)
last year i brought my m14 to hunt but i really found it heavy and a p.i.t.a. to carry in the woods

so i was tinking of bringing the sks this year

also what kind of ammo should i get if i decide to hunt with it?

lol... you really should search this. Nuff said.

Would it be wise to hunt with an SKS? Do it. Don't use surplus stuff, and get soft point.

Discussion over.

Alot depends on how/where you hunt
Keep your shooting inside 100yd and you'll be fine.
I buy Sellier and Bellot softpoints from my local gunshop.
At our camp , we have blinds set up ( complete with lawnchairs) about 1/2 mile out so carrying a heavier rifle isn't much of a prob.
I hunt with an No4 but I also will use an M1 Garand ( now thats heavy) and the SKS will be used this year as well.
A WhiteTail buck is a tough animal to put down , so to get that 1 shot kill , accuracy is a must.
Practice up , keep'er safe and have a good time !

Go for it. I've shot a couple deer with mine. It seemed to drop them quite handily @ 100-150 yds. But that's when they are at rest and unaware, I'm thinking that in flight with adrenalin going the 7.62 X 39mm would not work so good. If they are running away I wouldn't even try; even if the range was within reasonable parameters.
I used Igman soft points; fearsome report and muzzle blast( I don't think that translates into more power; probably just unburned powder).More noise and flame than Czech surplus by far though.
This year I've got some Wolf 154 grain SP I'm going to try.

Just think of how many thousands and thousands of deer have been successfully hunted with 30-30's. The 7.62x39 sks is similar enough the deer will never know the difference.

I'm going to hunt with my SKS this year, I'm even practicing my SKS prone:

But its kind of hard because I look like this

Deer? I'm going for moose and grizzly baby!

4x4 motorized wheelchair and cooler full of pistachios I'm ready to go

As far as I can tell an SKS falls a little short compared to a 30-30.
I'm sure someone can dispute this but water grain capacity of a .308 nato is around 55; a 30-30 is 45 grains and an 7.62 X 39 is 35 grains. I read this in a info magazine for the AK-47 and no, it's not in front of me, I just recall the numbers.
And I have an SKS and I think that it's the coolest thing since sliced bread, but my math says "saying a 7.62 X 39 is the same as a 30-30; is like saying a 30-30 is the same as a .308"
If someone has hard data to dispute this, please bring it forth; much appriecated. No offense intended to anyone.

how about coyotes with an sks?
Why not? Considerably smaller than a deer, my son shoots them with his. I still think the animal deserves a clean kill though. If I had to put a dog down I wouldn't shoot it in the guts; I imagine coyotes feel the same pain.
But then again maybe I'm a-bit too worried about the small stuff.

7.62x39 in an SKS does not match the power nor the flexibility of the 30-30, especially in regards to bullet weights.

however, it is a good rifle/cartridge for deer, for the same reasons as a 30-30 lever is, i.e. its fairly short and light, quick shooting, and fairly tame in terms of recoil.

i know some guys who hunt moose and deer with the same 30-30 carbine, but i doubt there are many who take their SKS to moose camp.

It seems to me that most SKS are great for short range bush hunting and serviceable to over 100 yards.

It hunts with SKS .

Interesting enough theme and accepted an interesting turn and development .
Possibly who that will be divided by pictures about hunt with SKS .
P.S.
It can be to open a new theme: "It hunts with SKS" ?

The 30-30 case may have a larger capacity than 7.62x39, but it was designed as a blackpowder cartridge and is rated at a SAAMI max pressure of 38,000 cup, while the 7.62x39 is rated at a SAAMI max pressure of 50,000 cup. This difference closes the gap. The principal advantage the "30 short Russian" has is that it can use far more efficient bullets than the average tube loaded Win 94, which gives it a great advantage on smallish game.

I knew someone would step up to the plate. I know more now than I did 10 min's ago; thanks for your help. How does it compare on the ft/lbs scale?

Actually I think this is an interesting post. I've even saved 10 rounds of original Norinco soft points just in case. I have heard that the Russians have used the SKS for wild boar hunting. But if anyone has any real experience please tell me. I don't see why not it could sutable for certain game. It's very close to the 30-30 in power but a little better at longer range(due to the spitzer type bullet)

The use of cartridge is possible 7.62x39 SKS for hunt on a wild boar weighing to 100 kg.-150 kg are to 150 meters in the distance.
