Has anyone here gone hunting with there SKS? I know it is possible to get lead, soft tip hunting bullets in 7.62 X 39.

I don't know if anything could pry me away from my 7mm as far as deer hunting goes but I was thinking of using my SKS for shooting coyotes.

Share any SKS hunting stories you may have!

I took my S.K.S. coyote hunting with me the first time this year. It was like bringing a knife to a gun fight. Generally coyote hunting is more long range so I would not recommend it for this type of hunting. Althought, if you can get them in close you might have a better chance.

Once in a while I get across some really cool ammo, but often I miss it. I have only 2 boxes of factory ammo that used Hornady V-max bullets. I have seen an ad for similar ammo, but I totally cannot recall where...

I use my SKS for deer hunting. Most of the hunt camp uses Mini-30, but 2 of us cheap skates use a SKS. Many Deer have been taken up to 200yards with them using prvi-part soft point ammo.

Bayonet range to 100 for Black Bear.
200 yards for Deer.
300 for yotes.
Bayonet range to 600 for Zombies.

- Just my subjective impressions. :D

i think with those fat ass iron sights, i would need a scope to be able to hit something at 300, but ive seen a guy hitting stuff no problem at 400 o youtube so i guess its possible.

lol ^, the clip by mag30th?, he had a 50/50 round duckbill magazine on there, hopefully he put it on there to mock Canadians who like getting 5/50 round magazines. Even still, he was shooting steel and edited out the 'hits' - notice he was RELOADING, and did not bother with tapco accessories. :D :evil:cou::stirthepot2::nest::dancingbanana:

- if any of you are posting typical group sizes, I am not seeing them. . . :p

Yesterday's experience at the range suggested that I need more trigger time to achieve effectiveness out to 200 yards. While I discovered that my lot of ammo had different headstamps, it was still accurate enough from a bench at 100 and various other shooting positions to suggest that any failure to connect was predominantly mine.

I can see myself getting to the point where I could take deer out to 200 yards (probably in some sort of supported position), but would think that between the size of the target and bullet drop, that dropping a coyote at 300 would be one lucky shot. It's hard enough to see the target and figure out the alignment of the bulky sights at 200.

Since the original post was from a hunter in Alberta, I'm pretty sure that an SKS isn't the best choice for shooting yotes out there, where distances can be far. I suspect that in some more wooded portions of Southern Ontario where it's possible to use a .30 cal centrefire for deer that an SKS would do fine.

with those iron sights im good till about 200 right now lol thats all im sayin..

The SKS was never designed for great accuracy. It'll do for deer at relatively close range, but 2 or 300 yards is pushing it.
"...need a scope to be able to hit something at 300..." A scope won't make a rifle that isn't accurate with iron sight shoot better.

I would say 200 yards max on sks with iron sight, at 100 you can hit very accurate with some practice, at 200 it starts to group around +6 inches, you will definitely need to be in some sort of supported position, sks is a heavy gun

In conclusion:
100-150yards is effective
200 yards would be max

Although these are with iron sights, if u get a tapco stock and put on a scope, and use Prvi Partizan ammo, then you may just bring that effective range to +200yards
