Today is the start of goose seaon in my part of Ontario and I am all set to go, then I busted the knuckle and one bone of my little finger on my right hand. Has anyone tried hunting with a cast on the trigger hand? Did it do any more harm or cause more pain? I will be using a 20ga pump shotgun with 3" steel shot at 1550fps. I have limited use of my thumb index and middle fingers and will be hunting alone(as normal)

I can't say much for hunting, but I have played football with a broken hand and shot pistol with a broken support hand and I think you shud be ok...you are going to feel some pain everytime you pull the trigger tho. I would try and obsorb as much as you can with your shoulder and try not to grip the gun too hard..happy hunting!

I broke my arm a few years ago just before bow season... There was no way I was going to miss hunting so I made a brace that would strap to my wrist with a telescoping mop handle that extended to a bracket on my belt... That allowed me to hold up and support the bow while I drew it... I shot a bull moose and two deer that fall using the contraption... Suck it up and get out there... As long as you can hold the gun and squeeze the trigger, you are good to go...

Find a few 20ga snap caps and practice loading, swinging the shotgun through an imaginary target, and "firing". Practice, practice, practice. Before long you will find out if you can hunt like this, and if you can, what works and what doesn't.
Good luck! I hope the geese fall out of the sky like rain for you.

I have major nerve damage in my left hand and am waiting for surgery.I can't lift or even grip hardly anything so I have been practicing by resting the forend on my forearm to hold the gun up. It was very awkward at first but after a while it just became normal. As tharjoe said practice, practice, practice and you'll get on to it.

Take it from an old fart, with various injuries that I never let heal properly.
Better to postpone a couple of hunts, than to pay the price for it, down the line.:)

I shot a trap tournament with a broken thumb on my trigger hand. My face took a beating. Pain fades go hunt. But the above post is correct. My body is a wreck for my age but I never let it get the best of me

Like trebor2880 I too have hunted (& other things) with bust up parts. Wait if you can, if nor tape the hell out of your hand & best of luck. PS even with a taped cast it is not good & if its a plaster cast keep well away from the water. Been there done that.

I got drunk in the El Mocombo in Toronto in '72 and got into a fight with 2 bouncers. Three days later I shipped out to Cornwallis N.S. for 11 weeks of basic training with 5 cracked ribs. I don't think a broken knuckle would slow me down for hunting much. No brain, no pain! :p

For me, it all boils down to enjoyment. If you love hunting so much that missing a day in the field is worse than suffering a bit while you do it, then go have fun. If, on the other hand, a miserable day in the field makes you wish you'd never gone out, then stay home until the cast comes off.

If you do decide to go out, consider using light loads.
