Hunting with ear protection?

I wear the peltor tactical ear muffs, amplifies low noise but when the gun goes off the muffle the sound, work great

How does it effect normal human horizontal triangulation? The design makes me think that there might be disadvantages in identifying game location at the more acute angles. For example, my hearing may not be the most sensitive for sound, but very good at pinpointing game with low sampling rates of foot movement.

"It's interesting that the people who don't yet realize that they are ruining their hearing say "I wear no protection 'cuz I need to hear" and the ones who have already lost hearing ability and now hear a constant high pitched buzz wouldn't shoot anymore without protection."

That's right. Don't want to lose any more. My father started taking me on wood cutting trips from about the age of 8 and I was exposed to loud chainsaws for years and years with no ear protection. Then I worked on dozer boats too, with no noise protection. Then I played in rock bands, plus I've been shooting from about the age of 12 with no plugs at first. It all adds up and I wish I'd cared about hearing protection earlier in life.

A FINE post my man - I've been saying this exact thing for YEARS!.

I too was a foolish lad, and now I have constant ringing in my left ear. I have trouble hearing conversations in bars or loud social settings. If I shoot even ONE round of 12g without plugs now, both my ears will ring for days.

I've had people call me a pussy for wearing plugs/muffs ALL the time now (even when mowing lawn, impact wrench, air compressor, etc.), but I value what hearing I have left. Electronic Muffs for me is a necessity for ALL types of shooting I do - range or hunting!

I'm only 30 - so I'm hoping I have a looooong time of needing to hear left!

USE PROTECTION!!!! ALL THE TIME!!!! :D

I personally use the "Radians - Hunter's ears" product and find that they work very well.
They amplify all sound, so some people find them irritating when it's windy. When it is windy I just use them at the lowest setting, which is like "normal" levels of sound in your ears. I always wear them when I hunt or shoot. Some people on here have mentioned the issue of directionality associated with electronic muffs. Since they use an omnidirectional mic it can be difficult to pinpoint the direction a sound is coming from. When that happens, I simply take off the headset for a moment until I know for sure which way it's coming from. I then put them back on and take my shot. I've found them to be greatly advantageous when hunting as they allow me to hear game that is far off. They also help me to be more aware of the noise I am making. Hearing loss is permanent, so spend the money. It's the best $150 I've ever spent on personal protective equipment.

Beretta electronic hearing protectors if you can afford em. What price hearing? If you can buy magnum rifles or your 12ga. shotgun then you should be able to afford to keep from going deaf. This is not something to skimp on. And once you buy em DO wear em!

I have a pair of foam plugs, that are mounted on a hard plastic, almost headband looking thing. Some guys probably know what I am talking about especially if they have worked in trades. The band or loop keeps them around my neck nice and handy and I can one hand them very quickly into my ears. The band squeezes inward so all I have to do is put the plugs in my ears and the band pushes them in.

Just an extra step before I shoot, like making sure I am off safe
