Hunting with red dot?

Anyone here use a red dot for hunting? I just finished this video and it has me considering making the switch.

I can speak from experience- at 200 yards and better the red dot fills the target- you're fine as long as you confine yourself to 100-150 yards- 200- 250 which is where most my target experience has been- you need MAGNIFINYING GLASS- IN CALGARY, I WOULDN'T EVEN CONSIDER IT- most of your terrain is mountainous or flat open plain- that thing is for brush guns only

I use a red dot on my 45/70 when I am dogging the woods and its great however if I was going to be making 200 plus yard shots then I would be using a scope

Second that on the above posts. For quick target acquisition at closer ranges, and I mean 100 yds or less, they're fantastic. You don't have to centre the dot on your target and you can keep both eyes open. I used to use a Bushnell holosight on my SKS and my 20 ga. which were my short range shooters. If you're shooting at over 100 yds. put on a 1.5-5 X20 or something similar.

I have used a red dot on my .308 deer hunting rifle for 16 years and I can say without a doubt it is the ultimate bush rifle sight. Where it really shines is a running deer through the bush... there is no better sight. BUT, what everyone else says above is accurate... it is only good out to 100 yards. My 3 MOA dot completely covers the deer >100 yards.

I've been playing with a Bushnell TRS-25 recently.
With the intensity turned to 5 (halfway), the dot blots out a CanadaAmmo target at 100 Y
At level 3, there is a hairline ring of target visible around the dot at the same 100Y

I tried one and didn't care for it, the red dot filled the entire rabbit on my .22 making it difficult to aim precisely. I switched back to a regular scope.

In low light red dots suck. The glass is dark and most dots are too bright.

Unless technology on them has changed drastically I say you might as well put a shotgun bead on your rifle as one of those sights. The bead is just as usefull and 1/50th the price.

Red dots definitely have their place. They are excellent at high speed, low light and at non magnified shots where both eyes are open. Its almost magic how it happens, but it just makes sense once you use it.

However, there are some drawbacks to red dot, such as the non-magnified part, and the dot size dictates the split second speed of dot acquisition - fine balance between speed and accuracy in this instance. Also it is a poor choice for wing shooting and most non-slug shotgun applications.

I have a SINGLE POINT red sight- if you donm't know what that is , look it up- it's a red only and it's mounted on an UZI- that's the only gun i would consider mounting it on even with a co-witness mounts- the exact same set-up was used in the movie"the wild geese"-
