Is there any certian type of slugs that you just use when hunting? Or is it just what ever (ex. hollow point...etc).

For a smooth bore of course.

If your shooting a plain shotgun, do not used saboted slugs. Shoot foster type rifled slugs. If you have a fully rifled barrel, or a rifled choke tube, shoot sabot slugs. I think you only have the hollow point option for fosters. I've never seen any other. Most sabot slugs on the market today are made for deer hunters, and probably wont offer good penetration on bull moose shoulders. the exception is probably the Foster. But I'm not certain on terminal performance of the new gen slugs on large game.

Cant hunt moose with slugs in BC.... Bear on the other hand it works great! I just used the cheepys and they worked good!

I like shooting Federal 3 inch, 1oz sabots. The shoot flat (for a slug) and are pretty accurate. Recoil when sighting in at the beginning of the season can make sighting in a 2 day task however. The slugs are made of copper, no lead. I have only retrieved one slug from a whitetail. All other deer that I've taken with a slug have been through and throughs. We have 3 tags for that season so really quick match I'd guess I've shot almost 50 deer with a slug.

Not sure if you can get these at SIR or Wholesale but try these:

Challenger Slugs

Everyone in the group I hunt with swear by them..

I have a rifled barrel for my HP9 and shoot the Remington Copper Solids.

Hmmm I never thought about using my HP9 on Mule Deer, awe crap another choice. :D

Rob, we need to take a field trip to Vic and see what kinda hunting slugs are down there.

Could I go to CDN Tire and pikc up a box of their Winchester 12 ga rifled hollowpoint slugs and go hunting with them?

Challengers are crap... they are accurate on paper but poor on big game!
Standard one ounce foster type slugs are not optimum either... they are 50-75 yard killers but lack penetration past that.
You need a Premium 1 1/8th ounce slug like a Brenneke for hunting big game. There are some others out there that will work well also... Federal Tru Ball or 3 inch Vital Shock. If you have interchangeable tubes the Remington Buck Hammers work well with a rifled tube.
Most importantly you need to practice... slugs are not like shooting bullets from rifles... limited range and dramatic trajectory curve! Learn your gun and slugs your shooting... then go hunting!

Here in NB we don't get an extra season for slugs, but do get a 4wk rifle season, so consequently very few people (legally) hunt with slugs here. There is only a very small selection of slugs here because of that and no Challengers at all. I've never tried them or even seen them. I have tried a few Win foster types in my 870, but only got about a 4" group at 50yds with scope and a 20" IC bbl.

What is it about the Challengers that make them "poor on big game"?

.

I can't speak for anything larger than deer but from my experience the Challengers are very effective for that size of game.

I would be interested in hearing other people's experience.

Are the Challengers the Canadian made line?

yep, made in Quebec. I've never used them on deer, but they do fly well on targets. Brenneke are good too. Back in the days before I had a rifle (under 15) I carried a shotgun with rem sluggers, but we weren't shooting past 75 yds anyway. Now I use Copper Solids (barnes X) if I carry the slug gun at all.

Challengers will also go right through a whitetail. Lots of guys here use them.

Sabot slugs are really intended for rifled barrels but no harm in using them in a smoothbore. Although a slug with a "finned" profile (like the challenger) will fly better out of a smoothbore.

A sabot going through a full choke could pull your shotgun apart, the same as steel going through a full choke.
