Hunting with slugs

Cant hunt moose with slugs in BC....

Never mind found it on page 16 of the synopsis.
I guess they are trying to keep idiots from using buckshot.

Kind' a silly to be unclear when one can use a Snyder mini ball on a moose, and not a slug.

A sabot going through a full choke could pull your shotgun apart, the same as steel going through a full choke.

This is nonsense... all sabot slugs and foster slugs are made to pass safely through a standard full choke!
The only issue you will have if you try to shoot a sabot through a smoothbore with a full choke is that it will not stabalize and it may even tumble.
Steel shot on the other hand can damage your full choke barrel....

Here in NB we don't get an extra season for slugs, but do get a 4wk rifle season, so consequently very few people (legally) hunt with slugs here. There is only a very small selection of slugs here because of that and no Challengers at all. I've never tried them or even seen them. I have tried a few Win foster types in my 870, but only got about a 4" group at 50yds with scope and a 20" IC bbl.

What is it about the Challengers that make them "poor on big game"?

.

Challengers have a large piston type attached wad that is supposed to seal gas and stay attached to the slug in flight to stabalize it. But more often than not this large hunk of plastic will detach from the slug and cause flyers. And worse if it does manage to stay attached it causes the slug to change directions upon entry into an animal!
The alloy used in Challengers is very hard compared to Brennekes and other softer more effective slugs, this limits energy transfer and contributes to funny wound channels.
I have seen myself and heard from others about more deer running away wounded from Challengers than any other slug made! I have also used them and seen the results first hand many times.:(
In my group they are held with the same disdain as Buckshot... not to be used!

X2 on that one. I have a well used and abused mossberg shotgun with a smooth barrel full choke that has seen hundreds of slugs including many sabots.
