Hunting with the 17hmr

When the 17hmr first came along I had to have one so I ordered a marlin 917 from SIR.. Had it a year and then wanted a 22 semi but had no money (18 trying to live like the rich lol) so traded it for what I thought I wanted an a brown one.. Well I just traded for another one this Time a 17vs.. I'm thinking it will make a nice trapping gun for shooting grouse while still being able to possibly harvest a fox or yote should one offer a shot.

Has anyone had experience with the hmr shooting fox, coyotes or wolves? I'm in Ontario bush so shots would be most likely inside 100 yards. And like I said not so much as hunting k9 more taking a shot if one was presented.
 
The biggest problem is the small entrance and no exit hole so no blood trail on chest shots especially in bushy areas. They all seem to run unless it is a spine shot. I try for head shots inside 50 yds.
 
I've had no problems dispatching foxes drt with 17hmr. Coyotes have ran much further before going down and may or may not be found due to weak blood trails. I generally don't try head shots.
 
It's a good round if you keep it within it's limits. It's quite accurate for rimfire, but if it's windy things go south. Penetration isn't great, and I would limit animal size to mature foxes, just my 2 cents.
 
You would be better off with a .22 WMR in those situations... I have owned many 17 HM2's and HMR's and hunted with them, but a Maxi-Mag in a .22 WMR packs more of a whallop. I wouldn't shoot a wolf with an HMR or a WMR... but either will kill a coyote at close range with a well placed shot... but my choice would be the WMR.

^this. I've seen HMR wallop a fox (I wasn't the shooter) and it was dead before it hit the ground. Plenty of gun for that. Coyotes~I know some guys do it, but in my experience shooting even groundhogs with both...22WMR is way harder-hitting/more effective. If I had to have 1 rimfire gun it would be the 22WMR.

Since it sounds like the 17HMR is what you're going to use for everything...see how it likes shooting the 20gr. HPs. They would be more effective than the 17gr. options.

I stumbled across this guy who has a blog "Trapping In The Wild North'' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atGrTDhYVGQ
He was out and stumbled across a Wolverine that was eating his Lynx bait sets.
Uses an HMR.
Watch the video and his comments... I am not 100% this is the ne where he talks about having to repair it, but he has shot several targets of opportunity with his HMR and has some stitching to do.
As a Trap Line gun the decision is yours on how much sewing this winter you are prepared to do.

I had actually forgotten that Andrew was using a 17 hmr for a trap line gun.. I don't mind sewing lol I have been givin coyotes that farmers have shot with 30/06 and I can make them look good again lol
I'll have to just give it a go this winter and see how it does!
 
HC, I think he has another gun he uses that made a bigger hole than the 17hmr???
I was impressed with the guy and his dedication and of course the skills both with the cam and traps.
The Wolverine that took 3 rounds into the lungs was an impressive feat for the 17hmr I think.
Hope he is back at it this winter and look forward to reading your success and his blogs.

I follow Andrew Stanley on fb and YouTube, his show used to be on wild tv but doesn't seem to be on these days. However he did update earlier this month to say that the warm temperatures in the NWT has kept him from getting to his beaver camp because the rivers are not frozen over.. I'm a very small time trapped but with big dreams, started trapping 10 years ago but hoping to get a registered trap line in the years to come so I can cover some serious ground..I'm hoping I'll get a chance to see how the 17 hmr serves as a trapping gun.

Alberta and NWT wolves have bigger tics and flees than a .17 rimfire. We have big dogs here, there is a reason why we use 22-250, or at min 223 at close range. You might hit them but you will never recover them. 17 rim is under powered and cruel to hit animals that you can't kill them with. I think you are disillusioned of the energy and killing power of a .17 rimfire
