I’ve got the time this year to get out and hunt wolves.
The Sask gov have issued tags again for fort la corne wmz. Season opens Oct 15th til dec 7th

I’m going to use my 308,fox pro caller with external speaker and I’m having to wear fckn orange.

So I’ve located an area in the forestry with wolf activity, plenty of logged out areas.

My question is what time of day and what call would one use to call a wolf out?

Hunting wolves I'd do locator calls before sun rise. You get answers you know the pack can hear you.

Then I'd switch to territorial wolf howls or coyote howls at first light. Get them coming your way. Can play some prey distress in between for a few minutes each series.

Wearing orange isn't too big of deal, Especially with snow on the ground. Wolf will see orange as a grey color like the snow. Just need to break up your silhouette.

I dont have a lot of wolf calling experience, But that's what worked for me. Lots of youtube videos from guys in Midwest calling and killing wolves.

YouTube a guy in alberta channel thewhitesilence and see a couple shotgun doubles he did this past Xmas. He may give a tip or two. I would try to get in ear shot, cover ground and howl every few miles and see if you get a response then be ready to move that way and set up and howl back and wait. Run and gun would be how I went at it. Any time I’ve heard them and howled back at them with my own voice they’ve come. Good luck.

Note they aren’t like coyotes, scared etc. They know they are the bosses in the land and come in way more direct.

Only wolf I've ever got came in to a cow moose call. It was circling around to get down wind and caught it crossing an old road through the dense timber. This was in October moose season in Northern BC.

Killed wolves a time or two calling moose. We bait here in Alberta by far the most effective way to do it. If you can see em though, calls work. First wolf I took was with a mouth blown cotton tail distress

I don’t know why anyone would buy a wolf tag instead of a trappers licence. With the latter you can shoot as many as possible from oct 15- march 31. No dress code. You won’t be able to hunt fort a la corne but there’s lots in the farmland all across the north.
I’ve used the wildlife technology unit successfully

What does one bait wolves with?

A friend has a farm and there have been loads of wolves in the area the last two winters. They killed a bunch last winter and he's seeing them on the trail cameras this fall.

Bait with road kill. Contact highways maintenance and find the (moose)dump site.
But wolves can travel 50 miles so it might be a month before they are back to the bait.
Trappers use snares with funnels into the bait.

You will have a better time with locating the pack befor sun rise get to the area find a fresh track and track for a bit then call. They are not like coyotes, not going to have much success if you just find an open spot and start calling.

I believe tag/wolf tag system is for northern zones where there is a a trapping lease and over the counter trapped licence does not apply. Have to check again to confirm

Thanks for the clarification Keith, you are correct (so is the op).
For the price of a south sask trappers licence I always keep one.
As for forest wolves my usual policy will stay in effect.

No Tags needed where I am in BC.

I managed to get one on a Trail Cam following a Buck I was tracking.

I see prints in the snow, but never saw one "live".

Plan : (1) blind, (2) Doe urine spray, (3) Caller, (4) Semi Auto 223.

Viable ?

I hunt northern Ontario so totally different terrain but I've had great success calling wolves in with a Johny steward mouth call. It'll do everything from crows to mice to rabbits to deer in distress depending how u bite the tabs. I hunt in an area that's known to have alot of wolves and my goal was generally to try to call in a black bear but the wolves have always showed up first
I blow the call for a minute pause for a minute and repeat several times. Sit silent and motionless for 20 mins then repeat the set again. Wolves are usually coming in hard right at the start or they'll sneak and and try to circle downwind during my second rep.
2506 really knocks them down. I've also taken them with my 9mm carbine. I have called in many while bear hunting. I only take ones with hides that I like. The natural grey and brown hides I let pass by as they're usually a secondary objective. I have set out to call them trying for a giant black male but was unable to get a decent shot at him.
If you can take multiples shoot the male first and often the female will turn back and watch for him allowing you to get on her for a shot
Be patient. They're smart and cunning. They'll often sit at the edge of a tree or shrub and watch before trotting out into the open. Always cover your down wind scent

Where I hunt, you only see the wolf if he made a mistake.
Such was the case on Tuesday as I sat in my treestand, high in the mountains of coastal BC.
A movement caught my periferal on the down hill side of the treestand and I was completely taken by surprise as a large wolf came sneaking thru the undergrowth at a steady pace uphill. I had him dead to rights not 50 feet out in front of the stand as I perched 20 feet off the ground.
It's a moment I wish I had a do over LOL..... I rushed my shot, having little time to get a bead on this fast moving animal. My shot missed and thru some supernatural powers that wolves seem to have he dodged that bullet and the second one and my chance was gone.
I should have made the noise I make to stop a walking deer.... a simple baahaha sound just like a sheep or a goat makes. Works every time for moving deer..... why didn't i think of it in that moment? I dunno but I learned a valuable lesson ..... and that wolf went on to eat more deer..... dammit!!
