Bad pic i know.
Just wondering what it would cost approx to have this properly drilled and tapped for appropriate scope mount and to convert it to a side push style safety.

Debating modifying this rifle to suit me or to buy a 98 action already having what i want

Drilling & tapping 4 holes should be a hundred bucks or so. Be careful who you let work on it. I let a "new guy" work on one of my Mausers... the front holes came back too shallow ( the screws would bottom out and not hold the base tight. That problem was disguised with a generous application of loctight!) and slightly off centre.

If by "side push safety", you mean the M70 type, I don't think I've ever seen one for a model 96.

Keep in mind you'll have to have the bolt handle altered as well, unless you plan on mounting the scope very high.

If it were me, I'd get one already set up the way you want.

Never done it, but thought about picking one up, and putting a long eye relief scope on it, keeping the ability to load with stripper clips. It would make a heck of a scout rifle, and no need to alter the bolt or change the safety.

Well - If you go with the traditional weaver two piece bases, the charger hump will require some customization of the rear base - often poorly done. Leupold makes a one piece for the M98 that clears the charger hump, perhaps they make a similar one for the 96 action. Alternatively, Sun Optics makes a one piece weaver compatible base. Years ago, I ordered one directly from their American website, it worked out well, and wasnt particularly expensive.

I think that you would be far ahead to start with a 1600 Husqvarna action.
A Swedish Mauser dated 1900 was the first, and last sporting rifle that I stocked from the plank.

Im leaning towards a 98 action already done. Just this rifle shoots so well. However shooting black bears in timber shadows at first or last light with my eye sight leaves me wanting and needing an optic

How about a scout style mount? B Square and S+K Insta-mount come to mind (one is better than the other). You wouldnt have the bolt issues, and the gun would be fast-handling.
