Near as I can tell, and I may be wrong, is that the 4000 is the Tradewinds [who was a major importer] designation for the 1640 [longer barrel] and the 4100 is the tradewinds designation for the 1600 [shorter carbine]. They all use the Husqvarna 1600 series action.

1600 is the model designation for the HVA Improved Mauser Action. Both the 4000 and 4100 are carbine models of the 1600 series. One has a monte carlo cheek piece and a bit fancier stock the other does'nt.

I was once told by a gunsmith a Mauser is a Mauser is a Mauser..... I took it as the mean all Mauser are the same. Not sure if this is true or not.

No, because there's small ring mausers, and larger ring mausers, and even the small ring mausers have variations. Like the M94 vs the M96.
The HVA 1600 series is a hybridization of the best parts of the small ring mausers and the large ring m98 mausers. And even then, it's instituted some of it's own design features, like the bolt release mechanism.
Maybe if you're not really in to mausers they seem all the same, but to many there's a lot of differences.

What Woodbeef said....4000/4100 are model types, 1600 is the action.
The Husqvarna Improved Mauser was first introduced as the 1640 the 1600 and the 1651 names came later. So, the correct "familly" name would be 1640.
1640, 1600 and 1651 are European (Swedish) designation of the barreled action, followed by Standard, Lyx, Special, Helstock, MC etc which are the types of "dressing" or "trim" of the stock, sights, and calibers (for the 1651).
The 4000 / 4100 / 450 and "Lightweight" are the common US / Canada short barreled version of the 1600 series in Europe. This version have a 520mm barrel.
The 4000/4100 a.k.a. Lightweight have checkering at the fore end while most European versions did not. They were also made in calibers not so popular in Sweden (except, maybe the 30-06) means 7X57, .243 Win, .308 Win, 270 Win and 30-06 Sprg.
The 3000 / 3100 are the long version (600mm) which is the 1640 series, which also includes the versions with 560mm barrels (Husky / H-5000).
