I cant remove my No.4 Butstock.

So I began turning my Bubba'd 1944 LB No.4 into a poor mans sniper by tearing it down to the best I can. But I can not even turn the Butstock screw and the screws that hold the buttplate on. My theory is that the wood has expanded and is basically squeezing the screws. Any input on this? I sprayed a little WD-40 on the screw to see if maybe it is just a little gummy, but I have no clue.

Otherwise the rifle is not a bad buy for $80 bucks, And I will enjoy the project. Its a shame it was Bubba'd though, the Butstock and whats left of the forestock are beautiful and I would have loved to see the full stocks.
 
What works is to use a long bladed screwdriver with a square shank. I got a massive one quite cheaply from Princess Auto some yrs ago and the thing could substitute for a sword if needed. Place the buttstock in a well padded vice and use a crescent wrench on the shank of the screwdriver to turn out the bolt. You could also first apply Kroil or another penetrating oil to the end of the screw which can be seen from the front of the butt socket and let it sit for a day before applying the screwdriver and crescent wrench.

To remove the buttplate screws get a proper fitting screwdriver with a long shank and fat grip to maximize torque force.

when i put my new long buttstock on it was abit of a pain the wood for the inner second step wasnt even cut i had to cut it down but it was good fun,then i had to sand the bore to get the piece to fit but it was well worth it, feels alot better now...
 
Next time try tapping hard with your hand on the top and bottom of the butt stock, alternate directions. It works but it is slow. They can be very tight when well fitted.

I have that big, massive, square shanked screwdriver...I clamp it in the vice pointing up. Then, with the rifle still assembled, lower it down on to the screwdriver till the slot engages and turn the whole rifle while pushing down hard and holding mainly the buttstock. Never fails.

BTW, you have to make sure one of those felt washers isn't in there, it will prevent the screwdriver from going into the slot. Sometimes they need to be hooked out first.

Now you have to carefully remove material to fit your new buttstock, then finish the filed area with boiled linseed oil.

I cheaped out and got one of the Mastercrap screwdrivers from Crappy tire. It worked fine on my other two Enfields, but this one was really hard. The problem was the driver kept slipping out of the screw and I was worried I was stripping the screw. I should probably invest in a better screwdriver if I plan on getting an working on any more Enfields.

Or, grind some metal off the tip of the screwdriver so that it fits snuggly in the bolt's slot.

Must have been a LB butt on a Savage or Brit No.4? For some retarded reason the LB butt is different compared to other No.4's.
