I.D. muzzle/sight protector?

I have had this thing kicking around for years and never found out what it is for. It turned up again the other day, so I thought I would post it here to find out what the great minds figure it fits.

From the bottom view, you can see the little spring loaded hook that holds it on.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the reply. I did some searches on line, but the Krag muzzle protectors I found didn't look quite the same. Maybe a different model? Any chance anyone has photos of this on a rifle?
