Hi there,
So,
I've been wanting a few things lately..
A bit of a 'theme' has been nagging at my 'wanted' bone,

Krinker, CZ 858, reading about making an SKS D into an AK folder clone, etc..

Took a quick trip to epps today with some friends while I'm in Barrie, and bought a brand new CZ-858-2 tactical.
what an exciting rifle this is.
I can't wait to give it a spin!.

This marks my first 7.62X39 gun, I'll probably get an SKS-D if I can find an AK kit for it eventually, but for now this is my only '7X39'..

It's lovely.
wonderfully clean shiny finish (nice dark grey with just a tiny tiny hint of blue, i was under the impression it was more blue, and am glad it's not)
the wood, although i'm sure i'll replace it, is lovely.
nice interesting pattern, pretty reddy brown colour, and it feels very strong and solid, while still being light weight.
I would have got a folding stock with it, but epps didnt have any, oh well, I'll pick one up from someone on CGN.

I love the size and draw. the shooting position is so natural and comfortable with this gun, and the sites are large and clear. very nice.
I love the length. as cool as the shorter 858/vz58 is, I actually prefer the bit of extra bite the length has. and even with it, this is probably the shortest long gun in my collection (i'm not at home so i cant check for sure)

I stripped it and took note that the internals are superb. tight, clean, fresh, open clearance. I'm sure it will be wonderfully reliable.
One thing i noticed is that the barrel is so low down in the body of the rifle. I'm sure the recoil will be very clean and straight and rearward with the nice low barrel position.

the magazines are absolutely tight and perfect. same wonderful clean finish, and mechanically they feel just superb.
the extras are a real treat. the mag pouch is very high quality, closes flush and cleanly, snaps tight, and the mags are seperated and perfectly arranged.

the sling is nice,
the cleaning kit is great,
the bayonet and scabbard are great and it's really nice to get one with a new gun. (unlike my milsurps haha)

I can't wait to give it a go,
someone PM me if they're a torontonian going on a shoot trip in the future and wouldn't mind some car company and a shooting buddy, I'd love to tag along!

Overall, more than pleased with the purchase, excited to have it, excited to use it soon, and as usual, great dealing with epps and the gang.

I'll post pictures when I get home, so don't start throwing signs at me yet!

Yes they are a great gun.
I just read on another post that Marstar will be getting some in with the chrome line barels.I guess i will have to buy another.

BBQ_Whoa!, please don't call the Czech commies, they have been fighting since the very first day to differ. :)
Even in their weapon choices, they have always strived to be different from the Russian Big Brother. That VZ-58 is one of many proofs: it was so superior to the AK that the Russian government couldn't say anything but allow them to keep it as their main assault rifle.
I have one of those nice VZ-858.
Shot it sunday morning with czech surplus ammo and all the bullets landed with monotonous regularity in the six inches black bull at 100 meters. My friend tried it and it did just the same; if anything, it seemed to group tighter after a few five round volleys, the majority of impacts hovering around the two inches center. Perhaps we got better at it, too...
You can do headshots easily at 100 meters with that rifle, provided you find a steady rest and not allow the magazine to touch the ground.
A very good, sturdy and really nice package.
I'm very pleased with mine.

I loves my 858. From 200m I can hit an 18" target with it almost every time while standing.

A word on muzzle brakes; the short AKM style brake will make the stock beat you about the face. It's commonly refered to as "the cheek slap", and after a couple hundred rounds it hurts like a sum#####. After I threw a longer "Modern brake" on mine it was completely eliminated.

The only downside I found was that it spews the empties EVERYWHERE!

And yes, I'm aware that's 7.62X51, I don't have any 39 right now!

Hope you like em,
and I will indeed do a range report (with a video maybe) soon!

Folder

I'm still in the early discovery stages; Shot about 200 rounds in mine and it is a very apt package. With a well tuned sling shooting standing is very easy; the rifle is well balanced (I wonder how its shorter-barreled military sibling handles with a real 30 roundful but I guess I'll never know)...
What I know is the 858 is a pleasure to snap-shoot.
I'll send a check to Wolverine and get a 5-round abbreviated mag because I might be tempted to use that rifle for deer next fall.
