The weather was really bad this week-end.. rain on friday, saturday and sunday, yet clear skies during the night with a full moon... makes you wonder why a deer would even think of moving during the day...
I rattled, sat, called, dogged, made up scrapes of my own, put in a ton of time over the week-end in my spot. I might have had a glimpse of a big buck one morning, he was following a doe but about 1 minute behind. Just as he was going to pass in the old bush-hog path I'm watching, he swerved up and passed beyond the end of the path in the woods... his back was much higher than the doe that had just passed and he was longer too... never saw the head
I did do something right though. I sent my dad to a spot around 500 yards from me. He then ventured still hunting in that area. He surprised a buck that was bedded down in a "slash" and after about a minute of doing doe call, he finally came within sight, which happened to be 20 yards.
Not bad for a 61 year old fart
We kept giving him a hard time because he shot the deer so far from the truck... lol ah well, nothing a cold one cant solve when we made it to camps.
How old you figure this deer is? He was 212 pounds dressed. 7 points, small ones though...
BTW he is definitely not the same buck I was hunting. This one had his own spot rubbed/scrapped. And there was just way too many signs in the area to have just 1 buck...
Season is over now
but on the bright side I guess I have a good deer to look forward to hunting next year...
