I finally made up my mind and made the order.

I was wanting a long range target rifle and was looking at getting maybe a 7WSM or 300WSM. I also hummed and hawed over 308 or maybe 7mm08. I finally decided to save my self money and fix up my Stevens 200 in 223. I already installed a boyds varmint grey laminate stock and had the action pillered and bedded. Other than that I bought a metal trigger gaurd and a harris bipod. Today I ordered from Sharp Shooter's Supply a barrel wrench and vice grips, a competition trigger, competition recoil lug and tactical bolt handle. I also ordered from PAC-Nor a 27" SS super match grade in sendaro countour barrel. It will be a 1in8 3 groove twist throated for 60-70 gr bullets. I am hoping to work up to shooting at 1000yards with it. I still have to decide on optics. I'm thinking a straight 10 in a luepold or bushnell 3200 with mildot should do the trick. I'm pretty excited about getting this in and put together.

Enjoy the project. How about a range report are your earliest convenience ? I always have a soft spot for accurate shooting .223's with fast twist barrels launching longer bullets!!

As cool as the latest and greatest rigs are there's something to be said for resurrecting an old faithfull and bringing it back to life. Sounds like a great build, post pics when you're done.

What you are doing is great and more power to you, but at the end of the day it is still a Stevens, and this is not the basis for a precision rifle (as per forum heading) by any stretch. If I was to invest the time and money, I would start with something a little more...ummm..upscale !

All I am saying is there is a reason the stevens 200 cost $300. And to invest $1000 in such a platform doesn't make sense to me. Just my thoughts.

The reason the Stevens costs $300 is because it's a Savage 110 without accutrigger.

Should we change the forum to only $3000+ precision rifles need apply? Hey D-pop... care to share your current rifle? Maybe you can have your own forum!

The Steven's has a poor stock and no accutrigger. That's why its cheap. The platform is still decent. It's a savage without the bell's and whistle's. $300 for the rifle and $1000 in mods isn't that much invested for a system that will most likely shoot very well.

Good job. Hurry up and lets see how it looks.

As long as you have a good barrel to hang off the action, the action itself means very little to a certain point.
In the fullbore TR game you will see Musgrave actions shoot as well as the latest and greatest RPA's, Millenniums or Barnards. The shooter's ability is the greatest factor.
Having said that, you won't see many Enfield actions shooting this game anymore.

There is nothhing wrong with a Stevens action.
It is the about the only thing that would be saved anyway!

The bolts aare great, and they bed up well.
The World record for i mile was held ( maybe still) using a Savage action in a laminate stock and a Shillen (?) barrel, in 7WSM.
The C.I.L. 950T ws and is a good action for TR rifles.
Like maynard said, for belly shooting the rifle is not near so iimprtant as the shooter.
Yes, there are still parameters, but the savge fits right in there!:dancingbanana:

Thanks for the post MP, Is that what it takes to make a Savage a precision rifle..wow....looks like a lot of effort to negate the actions role in the shooting !? But for the record, I did say what MP was doing was great and more power to him.

But for Nine's sake, here goes.

I own and shoot a long range precision rig (what I consider a precision rig!) and had it built over the last 2 years. Remington factory M700 long action, Lilja 27" barrel with a removeable muzzle brake. HS precision stock with aluminum bedding block. Factory trigger tuned to 2.5 lbs. Calibre for long range ? my choice is 300 RUM. With my handloads I shoot 1 hole groups at 100 m and often 3" groups at 600m. And when I lay the smackdown at 800 m, it blows em' up. Cost me a bit over $ 1300 plus the action, which is kinda my point.

dpopl8r, any interest in competing with this rig next summer? You know, just to show it off a bit. We're all very interested in seeing these types of rifles perform.

What kind of competition ? Formal, casual, organized ? Where ? I am interested, I love to shoot and try to get out as much as possible.

I shoot at our local range regularly, but the range is limited to 700 m, which is usually plenty long enough, especially when it gets windy (common in Alberta). For longer range, I usually head southeast into some community pastures and mess around with the dials shooting rocks way out there, but I don' have a formal range that accommodates this distance. I can't say I am a pro or anything out at 1000 m, but its my goal to get it figured out.

I also shoot a 6mm remington out to 600 m, so its not just the big 300. I even shoot groups out to 300m with my custom 17 HMR, which I love to shoot.

I would be interested in competing within any of these classes (big bore, small bore and/or rimfire). PM me when you are interested or with more info.

Sounds like it will be a fun project MagnumPeanut; I went through something similar (like many here) about 2 years ago. Mine was built around a Rem 700 SA, but I think the Stevens action is a good place to start also.

The only thing I would recommend is considering a bit more power in the scope, unless you have another rifle for the 10x to go on later. The nice thing is, if you go with a 10x and decide to sell it later, you should have little problems getting rid of it.

I actually just picked up a Bushnell 3200 in a straight 10x yesterday at the gun show. It has the target turrets and mil dot reticle.

Yours doesn't really sound all that great either, maybe a little better then a stock stevens. You could buy a 600$ savage that would shoot as good or better then your rig right out of the box.
