I've been shooting trap/skeet for about 6 months now, Using either my 686 O/U, Or my Franchi semi-auto, and i've always averaged around 15-18 in trap, and i'm not even going to tell you my skeet scores.
But anyways, a few weeks back, i purchased an A400 in camo, and took it for a run on the trap range...My first game was horrible, as i hit 9/25, and i thought "damn, i f@cking suck bad!"..i noticed i had an IC choke, so i switched it out for the Modified, and boom! hit a 20, and haven't dipped below since!! 24 last night, which is the highest score i've gotten yet!!
Hopefully i get to play some skeet this weekend to see how she swings..
Now, it's common to hear "It's not the gun, it's the shooter", which is true for the most part. However, this gun improved my game by leaps!
It just feels good to shoulder for me, It sights good for me, it's fairly light and the patented 'kick-off' system literally absorbs all recoil(feels like a 20GA or something)..
The only complaint is it gets a little dirtier than what i'm used to, but worth the cleaning from the performance it gives me.
The bonus however is that i can use this for hunting eventually too!
What an awesome piece of engineering...kudo's to Beretta for churning this shotgun out!

That is all..

Good night :)

All that and not even a pic of the shotty... tsk tsk tsk. Nice shoot'n but don't tease us like a cheap date. Give us some pics!

You're right..

Love the heavenly sparkle in the last pic! lol..It's god's gun man..

And love the optifade camo too..I ordered some extended 'black' HP chokes from Briley today myself, so we'll see how much better it performs then..

John here bought the Excel model for himself. He loves it and has almost 6,000 rounds through it without a cleaning. To date only three stoppages. And he regularly shoots 25 in skeet. They are surprisingly good semi's.

What are the differences between the Excel and Extreme? I'm assuming it's just that the Xtreme is more geared toward waterfowl etc..

Yes the Excel is the sporting gun, it has a blue receiver, extended choke tubes, does not chamber 3.5" shells. Also it can be fitted with a gun pod which counts shots etc.

Looking at picking up an A400 for myself as well...

Two questions: 26" or 28" barrel?
Optifade or MAX4 camo? :)

This will be my waterfowl gun, and maybe clays too.. although I already have a nice Browning O/U for clays.

Also, I pretty much NEVER use 3.5" shells - but would like the capability.... is there any downside to going with the 'Xtreme' (3.5" capable) over the regular that only takes 3"? Do they both cycle light loads just as well? I know the interweb will say 'YES!', but curious about real world use. :)

Barrel length is a personal preference and the ultimate primary use the shotgun will see. See which one feels best to you.

Yes, the 3.5" cycles light loads like a dream.

It's not the gun, it's how the gun fits the shooter.:)

I owned an A-400 for a brief time, and it was very reliable, with minimum recoil, but even after trying to adjust the gun for a better fit using the shim kit, it just didn't fit me nearly as good as my other shotguns.

Yah I guess I should fondle one first. Fit is usually not top of my list, mainly because I usually like specs/reviews. Also, I usually just 'make it work' and deal with whatever it feels like. Haha not ideal I know, but I'm usually a pretty solid shotgunner, so haven't been 'properly' fitted before...

Also thinking about a Browning Maxus to save a little cash.... But that's not my primary driver. It's reliability! I want THIS to be my absolute LAST shotgun!!! Yah right, I know. :)

If you are of somewhat average build, you can usually find a factory shotgun that fits you reasonably well, without resorting to custom fitting. If you choose a gun that fits poorly, "making it work" will never let you shoot to your potential. I have introduced several people to skeet in the past few years, and helped them to improve their scores, and in many cases, simply trying another gun, that fit them better, resulted in the largest improvement. I only bought the A-400, because I bought it as a like new demo for over 40% off. When I decided that it just wasn't going to work for me, I sold it for a profit of $300. I ended up keeping an SX-3 for a waterfowl gun, because even though it sells for about half as much as the A-400, it fit me better, and I shot better with it, as a result.

Well I ended up pulling the trigger on a Maxus instead. Played with the A400 in the store as well, but the Maxus seemed to shoulder better and is a little lighter as well.

Yeah the Maxus was $600 cheaper as well, so that didn't hurt. But I also already have a full set of Invector Plus choke tubes from my Cynergy, so keeping the Browning line made sense. Lets hope I don't regret it. ;)
