I got beat up a bit today

Well, our Muzzle-Loader season opens next Monday, and so does the controlled hunt in a local Wildlife Management Unit where one can use smokepoles or shotguns.

I have been neglecting my shootin' irons for many months and have not picked up a front-stuffer since the end of last year's season, ie 51 weeks ago. One of my slug guns is several years old and until today was new and unfired. That one is a Browning A-Bolt 12 gauge and is a thing of beauty. The other two slug guns have not been out to play for several years either.

So today I sighted in three .50 cal muzzle-loaders, two of which had new scopes on them, and three twelve gauge slug guns. None of the guns was initially on target adequately for hunting purposes, so all of them took multiple shots to dial in. It is not often I wish I had a lead sled, but today was one occasion!

In case you are wondering why three of each: one for me, one for my youngest lad and one for buddies who hunt with me but don't actually own the firearms necessary to participate in some of these seasons.............

I do have one question... I load my muzzle loader mid range, I figure that's plenty of punch... What do you do? Max loads?

No bruised shoulder, Jay, this old body can still put the gun butt where it belongs, most of the time. (I DID get a bruised upper arm, shooting out of a coffin blind at geese back in October, but a bad back does that to a guy when he tries to sit up and shoot all at the same time...........)

The pain from recoil is all in the neck and lower back - the neck because that is where the felt recoil is experienced, and the back because it is connected to the neck and is already not so good. Hence Robaxacet. Your time will come in twenty years or so....................;)

I shoot full power loads for most hunting situations regardless of the firearm. Two of my smokepoles are the Savage 10 ML-II that can burn smokeless powder. I am sending a 250 grain saboted bullet downrange at about 2400 fps, so there is a bit of a bump there. The slug guns are not as bad as full-house turkey loads, but still get my attention when I touch off the trigger. :rolleyes:

Pretty sure I still have a pic of his bruised arse around here somewhere from a spill he took at the hunting camp back ten years ago or so, hahahaha.

Wouldn't do that to you though buddy.

That was when I was ATTACKED by the buck, Joe! And that was a HELL of a bruise!

Robaxasal for this guy. And it help with more than back problems. Great for general muscle aches.
Getting old, when we were younger we imagined all the great things we were gonna do. Should have done it back then, before pain sets in.
Good luck on the BP hunt. I'll likely get out for a weekend.
