Well today marked the end of my 2 week shotgun season here. This year in the two weekends I was home from university I saw one deer and it was only it's ass end (ran away when I walked into my stand at 6:00am. It's raining today so I couldn't hunt and i'm going back to Uni today so that's it that's all...

This season was so weird to me. Last year was my first time hunting and I only had a buck tag. During the 1.5 weeks it took me to finally down a buck I saw at least 20 doe's within shooting range. This year I thought it was going to be so easy but they weren't moving and the weather was way too warm. Damn.

Don't feel bad I got skunked this year too. Been hunting for a few years & this has been the first time. Weather suck here as well, so I went north & the weather was only a little colder than here. Oh well it happens. A bad day of hunting is always better than a good day at work!

Our long winter, along with the coyotes, has really put the hurt on the deer population. I hunted a few different areas for the last two weeks, that normally hold dozens of deer including many large bucks, and all I saw was 2 does and 1 fawn.

The deer normally fair out OK for a few months of winter, but the last month or so I think did them in. We're probably looking at a good reduction of antlerless tags available for next year.

Several groups in this area only got one deer, some didn't get anything. I've got 4 tags to fill with the ML now.

Sounds like my area right down to the rain today. Eastern Ontario.

I only saw 1 deer, an 8 point on Friday night, luckily I was able to get him. It's the only deer from a property where we usually see deer every day?

Why can't you hunt in the rain?

good question..i believe it is because the deer have rented all the motels down the road to stay out of the rain..

but for the deer that missed out on the motels left me with the chance of tagging a nice buck the other day:D..and it was just a pissing down the rain was

I've already tagged out, so the rain doesn't affect me. IMHO rain is one of the better times to be out hunting. Granted it can be miserable if you are NOT equipped. One of the pluses of hunting in the rain is that most hunters are sitting at home, & the deer will still be doing their thing as normal. One of the best way IMHO to hunt in rainy weather is to use a popup blind. Find a nice field or deer trail & setup the blind. If you bring a comfortable chair, hot drink, & wear appropriate clothing you will do fine. I have an Eastman blind in woodlands camo & a foldup chair. The blind folds up into a small circle with straps so you can pack in on your back. Don't ever let the rain stop you from hunting.

Yep !! crappy yr for me too. Seems guys on the neighboring property put up two big tree stands real close to mine, only a few days before opening day. One was so close I could clearly see the guy hunting in it, and I felt like I was being watched all day. Seems the deer did not like all the excitement of new stands in the area plus all the noise they made making the dam things. My trail cam went from taking pics of deer every day to ZERO. Last pics was of the guys two dam dogs hangin all around my area.

First two days was perfect weather, then the rest of the week was T-Shirt weather, to friggin warm.

Might go muzzle loading next week-end, but in my buddies stand.

I agree the rain wasn't the issue, Hunting in plus +17c the one day was. So I went up near the Quebec border, I guess 2 weeks ago to hunt moose with lots of moonlight at night & +10 & +7 on that weekend the moose never came out of the thick stuff. Before that weekend lots of bulls were seen, but no tags, highs were around +5c, lows were around 0.
I just got back from my second trip up there this past Wednesday to catch the last of the moose & beginning of deer. Weather was colder, but so was my luck. Glassed a nice doe & then a smaller buck on Tuesday morning on a pole line but it was too far of a shot so I passed it up. I move in closer to where they were crossing after about an hour of them going back into the bush & sat for another 4 hours with nothing. Comeback on to the pole line a couple of hours later from the same entry point (new area & the only point I know) & dammed if another bigger buck isn't standing in the same area. So this time I hold over the back & miss. Rack my 375 H&H again while this bugger is just starting to move & guess what? Missed again! I knew it was too far but somwhere in the back of my pea brain said give it a try. To tell the truth, I'm glad I missed vs. wounding an animal with a lousy shot. Tracking with no snow in that kind of bush would have been tough!

Even in the prairies you can get skunked. My partner and I have been after a good buck since Sept. We have seen a pile of deer, a ton of scrapes, and have put in countless hours but still nothing. Had a 5X5 in my sights at a 8 yrds and my muzzle loader missfired earlier on. This morning my buddy had a bruiser broadside a 50 paces but the bugger spun and ran at the last millisecond .I had two deer come right by me as well but both were small does. Other bucks have been on posted land. What can you do sometimes the deer gods are against you.

If we scored every time it wouldn't be hunting. BTW I'm having a hell of a good time though. :D

We have been shut-out so far through our shotgun week (saw one doe, one fawn and one nice buck - all from too far a distance) and the following bow-only season. Thursday we took work off and saw 4 deer; three nice 4- and 6-point bucks and one doe, just too far out of range for the bows, sadly. One spotted my bother-in-law before he could draw, and it snorted and bounded away. If they weren't so beautifully frustrating...:(

I now have my playoff goatee growing. No shaving it until a tag gets filled!

I was using IMR 4227 in a savage inline. I found out that it is known to do that especially when the weather gets cold. I switched back to pyrodex and the problem was solved. Took a doe the following saturday with it. I won't make that mistake again.

Live and learn

We poured over probably 400 acres of mixed bush and farm land without seeing one single scrape and maybe a handful of fresh tracks. Last year it was like the deer were creating highways in our 100a. Kinda wish I was a bow hunter

We covered over 5000 acres and saw maybe 8-9 deer, shot 4 of them.

Good thing I have lots of moose meat.:)
