I am very intersted in the 6.5 x54r round. when I was looking around for information I read that the 54r case is one of the most efficient case designs. I have no idea what this could mean. anyone care to enlighten me. Thanks in advance for your help

"Efficient" is one of the words that gets bandied about, and has no meaning without specific context. Efficient in what way? Brass/Volume? Length/Volume? Pressure/Volume? Manufacturing speed? Powder/Velocity?

I'm not familiar with the round, but is it not a necked-down rimmed 7.62x54? If so, it's hardly a new (or even modern) case design -- so, I'd be suspicious of claims that it is somehow superior to the large number of more recent designs (it's possible, but hardly to be taken at face value without evidence).

I think many benchrest shooters are shifting to the newer "short/fat" case designs, and have seen some good technical arguments (much of which went over my head) about why.

Basically means it gets best ballistics per grain of powder burnt when using factory loads.

That's a reasonable definition. I've also seen it used in the context of how much powder combusts within the casing, vice burning in the throat/barrel after the bullet leaves the case.

And, of course, that opens the question of what one means by "best" ballistics. :)

HATCHER'S NOTEBOOK: energy distribution for the Browning Machine Rifle:
  • Heat to cartridge case 4%
  • Kinetic energy to bullet 29%
  • Kinetic energy to gases 19%¡P
  • Heat to barrel 22%¡P
  • Heat to gases 19%¡P
  • Heat to bullet friction 7% Total: 100%
So different fireams have different Kinetic energy to bullet %.

Kinetic energy to gas is is recoil and blast without benefit.

Like others have mentioned, context is needed before making blanket statements like this. With context, it's probably "one of the most efficient kinetic energy per recoil rimmed medium-power biathlon rounds".

That's some madscientist vs mathematicion equasion. In other words; Larry get your calculator and put on coffee, we're about to do some math all year long.

"...54r case is one of the most efficient case designs..." Wouldn't say that. The 7.62 x 54R is over 100 years old. There's more than one of 'em too. All of which date from before W.W. I.
The 6.5 x 54R will be a strictly reloading thing. And any rifle will be a custom build.

Sunray I didn't say that as a statementof fact

in fact my whole purpose was to find out what the person that said it could possibly mean. That is why I posted to relieve my ignorance somewhat. Thank you to all you replied I appreciate it
