It's from a friend who is getting out of shooting handguns and into sailing. It's in excellent condition, having fired only, or mostly .38Sp.(The chambers have evidence of firing 38Sp.)

I have the original box, packing, price tag, Action Package promotion, Warrantee Statement, Front Sight Adjustment Instructions, and Safety and Instructional Pamphlet.

I don't seem to have anything that is specifically an owners manual.

So, it's now official. I own an example of my favourite revolver.

So, excuse me for now, I have to do some cleaning and polishing.
:p
And, I'll be at the range tomorrow.

Any advice, ideas? All are welcome.

Nice revolver! Chances are if he shot a lot of .38 Spl, it was probably lead...check the chambers for evidence of lead build up. If there is you'll want to get 'em cleaned out before trying some .357 Mag ammo in it. Have fun with it!

Screwdriver

I have a 686 want a copy of the manual and did you get the famous little screw driver?

Yes, S and L, I have the little "sight adjust only" screwdriver in its plastic case. If I can't download the manual from somewhere on the internet, I'd be very happy to get a copy of yours.

Yep, chamber buildup. I'll clean and polish in a few minutes.

Thanks guys.

BTW judging from the serial number and the experts over at the S&W forum, it's a '91 or '92.

Manuals for the S&W's are readily available on the S&W website. If I recall its under the Technical section. Its all there for you...
Welcome to the club! You won't be disappointed..

It's Clean and Shiny Now

Even my "I'm not interested" wife said, "WoW!" when it emerged from its cleaning session (the gun).

Copious quanties of Hoppes, CLP, a Dremel brush, and cleaning patches got enough of the black out of the chambers, I hope.

I still can see rings seemingly etched into the chambers roughly where a .38 casing mouth would sit, I guess.

I can download or order a manual from S & W, but it isn't the same manual that came with the gun--which would be the manual from '91 or '92.
I'll keep searching.

Today, I'll fire what will probably be its first .357 rounds.

Beautiful revolver, really.

I keep looking at them in the store, and missing my 586 that I sold years ago.

One day again, perhaps!

Enjoy yours - They are super accurate!

If I would have found one 586 in excellent condition, I would like to get one pair up with my 686

Those front adjustables are factory. My 686-3 only has the fixed front. It's not red ramped, just plain black. I think you'll enjoy your 686. Take a few more pics of her while she's clean...(mine never stays clean for long.) ;)

Re: Adjustable Front Sight

Here's the word from a poster on the S & W Forum:

"They were built for Handgun Silhouette mainly where you're usually shooting at 50,100,150 and 200 yards. This allows you to zero the gun at each yardage. I have a 686-4 6" with this sight but use it more for zeroing different loads. The allen screws allow you to set front sight height for each setting of the wheel, it helps to push down on the rear of it to take the pressure off as you change settings."

Here's a quote from another S & W Forum:

"Great front sight. I remember when they were the rage in Silhouette shooting but they also work great for any competition that has fixed distances.

All you do is set each of the four positions for one distance. Sight in at the distances you want and then move the little circular knob to the number corresponding to the proper distance.

In hunter pistol that would be 25, 50, 75 and 100."

Actually, at the range today, I was getting bulls (and a few flyers:eek: ) at 10 m. and 20m., so I don't know what the sight is doing yet--and I haven't fiddled with it yet.
