I know as much about scopes as you do about alien spacecraft.

Im wondering if someone can help me. I have $1000 to spent on my fist rifle scope for my savage flcp .308.
I want it for distance shooting as well as hunting when I ever get around to it. andy advise would be great!

bearing your title in mind, compared with some of the people that frequent here you are a scope expert!!!!!

I am in the same boat and after spending way too much time reading I think I have settled on a Sightron. Mystic Precision, a board sponsor, seems to be a reputable dealer who can suggest the best model for your application. In your price range the Sightron line seems hard to beat for value and quality.

Did never shoot with mine it is not home yet from Mystic Jerry made good recommandations, i got a Big Sky 36X42 BRD, they sure have goods reviews and well in your price range... Cheers. JP.

Some of us were pilots at Area 51, so your title needs to be revamped. :)

There's lots of reviews in the Optics section. You might want to take time to go over some of them. Other than that, I recommend scopes made by Leupold.

1 for hunting choose Ziess Conquest 3-9x40mm Contact Phil @ P&D Enterprises.
The long range choose a Sightron. Contact Jery @ Mystic Percision.
P.S. We are all alien's :p

What distance is your "distance shooting" going to be?

To use very high magnification and keep the picture light you want a larger objective lens (all else being equal - highest quality glass and really good coatings can make a significant difference in any given size of lens.) A really large objective lens can make a hunting rifle unhandy in the field.

For most hunting, 3-9x40 is more than enough. I suggest you consider a Redfield Revolution 3-9x40 which will be only a little more than $200 and apply the balance to a target scope. When you "ever get around to" hunting, switch scopes for the season.

If you want to spend $1000.00 on a Zeiss and do long range with the flexibility for hunting you can with with a Conquest 4.5-14x44mm or 50mm.

Get a Mil-Dot reticle or one of the Rapd Z , and that takes you to the next step above a regular duplex and allows for compensation right while your are viewing your target. They have nice fine clear reticles.

Side by side with the two choices mentioned here you will find better focus and clarity in the Zeiss.

Once you use a Zeiss you will have a tough time finding something better for the value.

I was just looking at a Zeiss Conquest at S.A.I.L here in Ottawa, 4.5X14 X 50 with the Z plex and I just might change my mind about the Sightron!!! An it was only slightly more the 1K. I wish I could compare side by side.

a fixed 36x might just be a tad too much for hunting applications :p

if i had a grand to spend i would either go with the zeiss 4-14x or a leupold vx3 4-14x, plus if you frequent the EE you might find a good deal on one of those :)

I like my Sightron, nothing wrong with it for it's intended purpose and price was also good.

I just like my German glass a bit better. ;)

As for alien spacecraft, I don't work on VW's .

I hear what people are saying about all the brands mentioned, and I agree thay are all great scopes. But for the price, and the intended "dual purpose" I would have to suggest the Vortex Viper PST 6-24X50 MRAD SFP. For less than a G note, you get very good optics with 4" eye relief, illuminated reticle, side focus knob, and an incredible warranty. It is a mid sized scope, with a decent low end magnification level for hunting and a good 24 power for engaging long range targets.

I have compared the PST glass beside a Minox and it is absolutely no contest... My brother immediately returned his PST after putting it next to his Minox.(more eye relief on the Minox too)
I am sounding like a broken record on here because I am new and nearly every post is about Minox.

I would also highly recommend talking to Phil at p-d-ent.com (he is the P in P&D Enterprises)... ask him about the Minox line when you ask about the Zeiss (can't go wrong with either one)

I have also read a ton of great stuff about the Sightron SIII, but I have never seen a Sightron anything :)

Cheers

You too? LOL

Ever flown F-117? Back in '80s? Ever trusted AMRAAMs?... Sidewinder it was in my book, regardless of shorter reach.

Landing was a bit tricky thou...

Two things about that:
1. You very likely read that somewhere
2. I am quite certain it is false :)

I am pretty sure Swarovski is the company that brings them into Canada, but doesn't own them. (so would that make them the Canadian distributor?, maybe those 2 companies are somehow connected ownership-wise but I haven't heard of anything)
I think Zeiss and Minox both use Schott glass though, so maybe people are coming up with their own conclusions based on that (and then posting them as fact)

Cheers

The optics in the Minox and the Zeiss are the same. Both are made with German SHOTT glass. The Minox has not been out long enough to give a long term result responce. I think the quality of the two scopes is fairly equivilent, however the range options on sizes is more interesting for less money
