A local hunter fell out of his tree stand a few weeks ago (stories vary, I wasn't there so I'm not going to assume anything). Thank God he had his cell phone. Long story short, we hoped it was just 2 broken legs but it turns out he's now paralyzed from the waist down due to the fall.

Had a good friend do it last year, fracturing two vertabrae. That particular hospital see's about 12 tree stand victims a year.

There should be some billion dollar treestand registry set up in light of this. Apparently they are a more legitimate threat to public safety then the things that actually go BANG.

I'd like to hear the stories about EXACTLY how, or what, leads to these guys falling out of, or from, stands.

Is it simple carelessness? Stupidity? Faulty stand? It's not always about tying off.

Same here. We have a couple of those store bought tree stands and I went up each of them once and both times I almost fell trying to get out of them. Haven't even considered going up them again, I'll sit on the ground below them.

Most people fall climbing into, or out of their stands; it's difficult to stay tethered the whole way up and the whole way back down again.

Hey guys, just thought i would update this post. A guy in my hunt camp is friends with the hunter that fell. Turns out his stand actually fell off the tree when he swung to his rear to take a shot. I didnt think to ask if it was a hang on or something he built in a tree.
