:D

I got it before Christmas and took it out last Friday and Monday.

On Friday, I shot three times at paper at 25 yards and was impressed. The front sight was centered.

I then tried a clay at 50 yards, it got dusted.

On Monday, I tried some new loads and compared them to Factory 150g. They need some work, but I used a 5 rd enbloc to break 3 clays in five shots at 100yds.

I shot the last enbloc from the bench at 100 yds and got this:

The dot is 8" The 8th shot was a dud. My first factory dud ever. :(

I should even mention that my glasses were fogging up and these shots would qualify as rapid fire in a match.

I'm going to enjoy working up some rounds with this one.

BTW here is the gun. I've since stripped and am refinishing the stock. The metal and bore on this gun is amazing.

I downloaded the target here if your interested:

Cool. Who is it made by? I have an International (IHC, affectionately known as "Cornbinder") made Garand (1954), it's REALLY accurate, amazing rifles these Garands... and to think that John Garand was born in St. Remi, QC, about 100 miles NE of Ottawa ON... his family moved to the US when he was eight (I imagine his real name was Jean Garand). I took a look in the Ottawa white pages a few years ago and there were some Garands living in the Ottawa area.
Interesting story about Garand, he refused to "sell out" to commercial interests to make a lot of money with his rifle, he was being courted by the big firearms manufacturers... instead, he gave the rights to manufacture his rifle to the US gov't... and they pretty well gave him nothing in return.
Anyway, pretty darn hard to beat a Garand... I would like to get one in .308, but the original '06 chambering will do! :)

I'm glad you two are happy with your Garands!

It's too bad John Garand got screwed by the U.S. goverment, the man was a genius like John M. Browning (he just didn't invent as many guns.)

I'm kicking myself now for not picking up a few of them when Lever Arms was selling them CHEAP! Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!

Oh well, hindsight is always 20/20.

Maplesugar every once in awhile some dealer in Canada (or more than one) will get a shipment in and sell them for a good price. Course the supply may be drying up now...
Keep your eyes peeled and check out the Equipment Exchange on this board as well, there may be a Garand or two for sale occasionally.

You will NOT be disappointed! :D :D :D

Strangely enough my Cornbinder Garand really liked some Yugo 150 grn softpoint commercial stuff, it was a tackdriver. I don't have photos to prove it but I have got simply amazing groups at 100 yards with that ammo (much better then SKScanuck but don't tell him... he just needs to find what his rifle likes to digest best). ;)

Yep, hell of a gunmaker. When he gave the M1 designs to Springfield they told him it couldn't be made. He then designed and made the tooling to make them........;)
Nice M1 SKS, looks like the dreaded "Danish Beech" stock on it from the pic.....:)

Yep, it is a Breda reciever made for the Danes and the barrel is also Breda made in 1955. The rest of the parts are SA (Springfield) and yes the stock is Danish, (I got the sticker from the inside.)

(much better then SKScanuck but don't tell him... he just needs to find what his rifle likes to digest best).

I hope to do better as my re-loading progresses. ;)

I bought a Garand off CGN. I haven't shot it yet but it's beautiful, I always wanted to own one when I was a kid, and at that point knew nothing about firearms ownership.

It's all Winchester parts, receiver is 1943, and a VAR barrel. It's a part of history to me!! It sits in the safe with my Enfield and K98.

a masterpiece...always wanted my grandfathers...to bad some thieves beat me to it( and about 100 other guns in his collection!):( that was decades ago but it still hurts....

I have a complete 1942 Springfield Garand and love it. Shoots great.

Heres a pic.

M1Garand-87.jpg

It's been in Danish hands at some point......another dreaded "Dane Beech" stock (so not all SA;) ........:)
Some people like them, I think it is the ugliest wood ever put on a rifle.....:( and on an M1 no less......
Swedes used nice beech, so did the swiss.....why the Danes used this low-grade stuff is a mystery to me.
My Beretta came in Beech.....I quickly sold it and bought a Boyds.

I haven't done it yet (knock on wood) but I hear it hurts like a mother.

You push down the follower which releases the bolt, it slams forward very hard. A little bit of practice and you can do it no problem.

My Grand-dad said it could 'Chamber a thumb'!

man I am starting to sound like 'Forest Gump' lol...

I think I've read somewhere that John Garand dropped out of school in the ninth grade, but took engineering courses through correspondence.

Anyway you look at it, he was a brilliant man!

By the way, SKS Canuck. Your group isn't too bad for a rapid fire target. Be careful not to reload any hotter than a milspec load. I've heard you can damage your op rod with hot loads or heavy grain bullets.

P.S. I'm still trying to figure out how in the world you've managed to shoot that target on Jan. 6, 2006 in Ottawa, when it is still Jan. 3 out here in B.C?

I thought you guys were 3 hours ahead of us......not three days!!!

Haha thanks for the laugh MapleSugar.

I don't want to find out!!

Nice to know that John Cantius Garand was actually a kid from St-Constant, Quebec who moved with his parents to the USA and became an apprentice at the Springfield factory.

Yep. Another Canadian.
