I made a custom forend

I was originally interested in a Surefire forend for my new Mossberg 590 SPX but after a bunch of research it seemed that in addition to being super expensive both the DSF-500/590 and the 623LMG-B were being discontinued (according to retailers I enquired with.) Word is they were also unusually and surprisingly heavy which didn’t appeal to me. I’m industrious so I decided to come up with my own unique custom solution instead.

I started with a standard Magpul forend, and added a CHS rail mount from CDM Gear. On to that I mounted a Streamlight TLR RM1 Laser/Light. The wire for which runs through a Magpul M-LOK Handstop (Airsoft clone) and into the forend itself where the wire is custom spliced and into a Surefire style remote switch. (Because Streamlight’s remote switch sucks in comparison.)

3M brand grip tape has been custom cut and applied to both the forend and to the remote switch.

The forend is extremely comfortable to MY hand, the wiring couldn’t be more “managed”, and the level of grip is fantastic.

Original Mossberg forend weight = 157g / 5.5oz
My custom forend w batteries = 370g / 13.1oz
Surefire DSF-500 w batteries = 516g / 18.2oz
Surefire 623LMG-B w batteries = 487g / 17.2oz

I’m very happy with my creation but interested in what others think. Thumbs up? Thumbs down?

Looks great. I had the DSF and didn't like it. Excellent light but too chunky and awkward feeling for me. I too went with an MOE forend but went with a Streamlight Protac HL-X on a Surefire scout mount.

How do you like that light? I recently purchased a Mossberg 590 retrograde and am looking at my light and mounting options.

My only experience with it so far is indoors in the dark but I’m happy with it. It’s not as bright as the TLR-RM2 but this is a shotgun not a rifle so I think the amount of light is just right.
 
I have had good success using Permatex Ultra Black for adhesion on uneven surfaces.
Comes in 3, 5 or 13 ml.

Hmm I’ll consider that. I may just skip the grip tape there.

Some additional notes on my forend:

* Wiring/splicing the Surefire switch to the TLR RM’s cable was NOT easy. Surefire uses a higher quality coaxial style cable than Streamlight does which is just two standard wires grouped together in a sleeve. Was a bit of a surprising and disappointing discovery when I snipped the end off a brand new $100’ish switch! But I got through it.
* Using the MLOK screw hole on the handstop for the wire meant that I had to use epoxy to hold that section of “rail cover” to the adaptor beneath it. Meaning there’s no longer a way to access the screw holding the adaptor to the handstop. ie: The handstop is on there pretty permanently now.
* The wiring job necessitated the use of some very minor interior Dremeling to the forend and some glue. The remote switch is permanently attached to the forend.

I’m happy feedback looks pretty unanimously positive. ��
