I need a .38 special receipe

FAQMAT... this mind sound like a silly question, but have you got any reloading manuals?

it's one thing to ask someone there favorite load for a given caliber/bullet/powder combination and double check it against published data from the manufacturer... but to use this "internet" information in lieu of proper reloading reference is potentially dangerous.

Just my 2 cents...

Mike.

Sillymike,
Until now, i have just reload for 9mm with the same recipe for 4 years. I have develop this load with cross-reference from the "Modern Reloading Second Edition" by Richard Lee, the Hodgdon reloading data centre and the reference table provided on the IMR website (I used IMR 4756 for 9mm).

Now i want to beggin reloding .38 special rounds. Someone give me 500 Hornaday lead bullets of 148 Grs. hollow base wad cutter. I have acces to "unique" powder for really cheap. Problem is that i can't find info in my book, on the Hodgdon data centre or on the manufacturer web site.

Now i ask to peoples here, who might have access to a larger book inventory than me, to provide me with a safe recipe from their reference manuals, if any exist.

Thanks

Duh? No Unique powder there...

Try this:

http://www.alliantpowder.com/reloaders/recipedetail.aspx?gtypeid=1&weight=148&shellid=26&bulletid=29

Alliant doesn't give data for unique for that particular bullet leading me to believe that it is not the best powder for that application. I use Bullseye and HP38 for this ype of load. I wouldn't necessarily focus on "cheap" when buying powder as it could cost you more in the end.

Can you use google??? Lots of manufacturers out there psot their data...

I have an old Hornady manual ( third edition ) listing 3.2 to 4.1 grains of Unique for the 148 grain HBWC with respective velocities of 700 to 900 FPS. The 4.1 grains is listed as max and the OAL 1.165". Hope that helps.

.38 special receipe

I have been using 158 gr semi wadcutters w/ 10 grs of Winchester 296.
This works for me . As usual reduce loads and work up.

EXCEPT WITH W296 powder (H110 is the same powder). See the manufacturers warning below to NOT reduce loads of this powder.

Reduce H110 and Winchester 296 loads 3% and work up from there. H110 and Winchester 296 if reduced too much will cause inconsistent ignition. In some cases it will lodge a bullet in the barrel, causing a hazardous situation (Barrel Obstruction). This may cause severe personal injury or death to users or bystanders. DO NOT REDUCE H110 LOADS BY MORE THAN 3%.

The PPC guy use 148 Grain WadCutter bullet mostly Speer. For accuracy - target load - the bullet is the most important factor. The powder of choice is Bullseye. You can try anything else - this is the best powder for that caliber. An extensive research for the perfect load in that caliber was done by the NRA and published in the 70's. Powder charge as low as 2.7 grains was used up to 3.5.

"...believe that it is not..." It'll do nicely. Alot of shooters us Unique for .38 Special. Alliant just didn't do any load developement for their site. 3.5 to 5.5 in my old Lyman book.
