I have a Remington 700 Tactical in a 20" barrel in .223.

I'm new to hand loading and I'm wondering who out there has experimented with this rifle caliber and configuration and what was the best performing powder and bullett combo.

I'm looking for a load for predators and the range.

I do intend to do exactly that, and looking forward to it. Have loaded 6 different bullet types but only had one powder to use, that being Varget. Not alot of choice where I am. I hope to go today and try them. I began at the start point for powder loads and I'll take it from there. I'm always intersted in other peoples experiences, particularily with a 20" barrel. My bullet weights are 55, 62, 68 and 75. Couldnt believe they made 223 that heavy.

Check out mysticprecission's website and read up on ladder testing. It will save a lot of time and ammo compares to shooting groups.

On a side note .223 is up to 90gn projectiles these days too!
 
Thanks for the tip! Where do I find that article on ladder testing? I prowled his site and also hit a link to another. Cant seem to locate.
 
I would look at the Nosler Ballistic Tip .224 60gr bullet and Varget. Had best results in these and some other 223 rifles with this combo.
 
I have the same gun, it's not really picky with 50, 52, or 55 grain tips. very picky (yet to find a good load) with 69 gr SMK's.... I'm thinking your 1:9 twist won't like those 75 grains much.

Best powder I have used for the little guys is H335. Never had luck with varget yet, but I've only run it in the 69gr loads.

Next thing I'm going to try is 50gr Nosler BT with Varget (Cause I have a lot of it)
 
Thanks guys! I'll take all the info I can get. The lighter stuff did print well compared to the heavier stuff. The heavier had a quicker fall in regards to trajectory. Wasn't surprised by that. Very dissapointed in the performance of the Nosler pertition 60 gr. Flyer city!! The 50 gr Nosler flew great, tight. The Hornady 60gr V-Max flew good, too. The 68 and 75 gr were Hornady match bullets and were not bad but not as tight as the 50's. All Varget powder. I would like to try something else but first i want to take the advice of the "ultimate monkey" and try ladder testing before I rule out weights.
 
50-55gr pills work very well in a 1-9 twist, 62s should work, 69s sometimes don't. As you get heavier you will see accuracy falling off. 1-7 or 1-8 will stabilize pills north of 70gr....

I have the same rifle (at least it started out that way) I found 50gr nosler ballistic tips pushed by 25.5gr of benchmark sparked with federal small rifle match primers delivered sub moa groups. Best ever 5 shot group was .65" at 200y, averages out at 1.3" @ 200y..... This is after spending a crap load of time tweaking the rifle, building test batch after test batch and a bit of cash ( mostly on the trigger). The only factory parts left on the rifle are the action, bolt body and barrel......

I agree, this will be an excellent combo for both predator and target. It's an accurate bullet, and easy to find. Varget will work well, but something a little faster might work better, like H335.
 
I just read the article provided in the link by LONELY WOLF...thanks, by the way.....on "ladders vs icecream" which explains my poor performance with 60 gr partition bullets. Interesting article. From what most of you are giving me, and I do appreciate it, the 1 in 9 twist I have likes the lighter stuff. I will hunt for H335 and try it, too.
I will also look for the 60gr Nosler balistic tip to try. The Nosler CT's I used in 52 gr were fantastic.
 
I have good results with H335 with 52 and 68 gr Hornady and also 69 gr Sierra bullets. My rifle is a Savage 12 BVSS with a 9 twist. Good luck, Cheers Roscoe
