Well, today was my first hunt ever and it was quite unsuccessful to say the leased :(

I should first say that I am the only one in the family with any desire to hunt. As well, I have no friends, acquaintances, etc. that hunt. But, I figured, I've been an outdoors person all my life; Spent loads of time hiking various trails and forests in the area, as well as the Algonquin region where my cottage is. Therefore I should be a natural at hunting.:slap:

So, today I decided to head down to some of the Simcoe County Forests, just north of Vaughan, here in Southern Ontario in search of some rabbit, and needless to say it became obvious that hiking and hunting are two completly different animals...

So does anyone have any tips on finding someone who can show me the ropes in terms of hunting?

I live too far to help you out but if you enjoy rabbit hunting, I would seriously consider getting a beagle.

Look for a beagle club in you area, you will very often find owners willing to part with a dog when they are not field trial worthy but still great hunters. Most often for free (my dad would give them away). Anyways, follow him around and you'll learn a whole LOT about hunting rabbits.
Short of that, you could just assist a few field trials, even better, ask if you could be a marshal for one of the classes (and stick right with the other marshal :D).
I guarantee you would love that. Just remember that a field trial = no guns :)

Most beagle owners are deer hunters too... (some are just rednecks though... lol)

Good luck and dont give up :)

rabbit starts as soon as the snow is down.

My hunting is regimented to weather.

DwA, Hiking and hunting are indeed two different animals.

You "hike" from an area that shows no sign of game.

You walk slow and enjoy the areas that suggest game is present, and often, you have to get real close and personal for rabbit's and grouse, or they will know you are just out for a hike.
You have to let them know you are hunting so they will take flight or flee.:D

Walk slowly in small patches of heavy cover, wild grapes, dogwood, etc..

It'll come to you in time.

Good luck...

You gotta wait for the snow. The the cottain tail rabbits like to keep warm under brush piles. With the snow you can follow there tracks.

You really are only hunting rabbits in about the last 10 mins of shooting light.
You have to tramp a lot miles to kick up a bunny when the sun is out.

Keep at it!

i believe you have learned a very valuable lesson in the hunt..and that is to learn you will not always come home with a piece of meat..
keep your eyes open, you will learn a new trick ever time you go out..
aside from that,enjoy yourself:shotgun:

A day out in the woods, carrying a rifle sounds like a successful day hunting to me.
Harvesting the game is just a bonus to a beautiful day in the woods.

Puma

good points, all I can add if you want to learn some more go to basspro web site and look up articles on all sorts of hunting, including bunny

if Im lucky enough to bag a whitetail early this year, I can take you (not that I have much to teac), I hunt SCF too, just word of advice, make sure hunting is allowed at the particular trail. not all of them are open to that activity

Like I always say:

A bad day in the bush is better than a good day at work.

So does anyone have any tips
So, don't worry about it. You were in the bush hunting and walking. You are already a winner.

The only advice I can give you is this story. Some body asked me once, “how will he know when I am being quiet enough in the bush?” I told him, “when you can start hearing the leaves fall from the trees, you are making less noise than the bush is?”

Good luck, but more than anything else, enjoy. It will come to you in time.

Regards
Robert

Thanks for the advice guys. Dont get me wrong, though, I had an awsome day out in the bush.

As for the beagles though, Where I live at the moment is not very good for a dog. I am planning on getting one when I move to a new place soon though.

If you love rabbit hunting, and you would consider getting a beagle later on, I would highly suggest going to some field trials in your area, you will absolutely love it. Here's a place where you could get some info: http://www.beaglescanada.com/

Ever seen a beagle built like a bodybuilder? :D

Have fun!
