Ok on SnipersHide there was a topic on Coldbore (fouled barrel) coldshooter


I have been able to start shooting again after some very long times away from home working and I have been testing the Cold shooter vs cold bore (dirty)

I know my LTR does shoot better dirty (like the ###y little ##### she is :dancingbanana:) and shoots to a different POI over a clean bore for me. Cold clean is 1 MOA high and .75 to the left.

What I have been doing is not cleaning the bore (not until the groups go south). On day one I pull the LTR out and fire one shot cold bore dirty at 100meters and log that shot (as always)

The next day I do the same thing, but fire a group out of my AR or 10/22 to let me get warmed up and not the rifle, shoot and record the shot. What I have found is this:

If I am warm and the gun is cold my first shot is right at POA;
If I am cold and the gun is cold my shot is always .5 high and about .25 to the left.

Next, I had a fellow shooter fire a few rounds (5 or 6) to get the gun warm while I was shooting my AR. I got behind the LTR, fired one shot POI and was right on my POA.

Then the next day I did the same thing, had a shooter fire a 5 round group but I did not shoot at all until that first shot for me behind the LTR.

That shot was like I was cold and the gun was cold, .5 high and just left of my POA....


I am starting to think cold bore is not really cold bore but cold shooter....

I would like to see what you shooters come up with in a test like I did :cool:

I think it could be a bit of both. I have tested this as well and I can honestly say I have found a few barrels that need a fouler or two before the group tightens up. However I have found that with the good match grade barrels this is not so much the case. I don't find any consistent evidence that my CCB shot has a different POI than the rest. Just treat each shot like it's your last. Just my .02.

I've played around with the cold bore thing alot. I used to be quite concerned with it when it came down to hunting and making the perfect shot. There are way to many variables to play with in our wonderfull world. You nailed some of it...sometimes its the rifle.....some like it dirty..the load..sometimes the shooter.....the weather.....the temperature...wind....etc.etc.etc. to nail it down to the perfect shot every time you pull your rifle out of the bag is just not feasable without being a human weather station/computer, micrometer, scale, etc..

But as Mystic said if you are within the expected group size of your rifle and staying inside MOA....In my opinion you are doing all the right things. After that it is a matter of knowing your enviroment. I think you have it down already Jamie....If you learn more in your endeavour and hit the perfect 10X every time you unsaddle the beast let me in on it.:D

I was tought not to get too wrapped up in the technicalaspect of stuff.
if the equipment was tuned, and evrything was good to go, it was
" quit messin' kid, just shut up and shoot!"

Form is everything, and if you are .5 high, sometimes and not others, it's you , not the firearm.

That is waht I was tought.
