Hi CGN'ers,

I am torn between 3 models of the Remington 700 SPS and am looking for some help choosing which is best for my purpose. I will primarily be using this rifle for target shooting and hunting (hence the reason for the short barrel) and I will be changing the stock to a B&C Tactical Medalist style 4 series 1000 long range. I am fairly new to firearms so I am having a hard time figuring out the pros and cons of the barrel lengths. This is going to be my first 30 caliber rifle.

The 3 models I have chosen are:

84207 REMINGTON 700 SPS TACTICAL, BLACK HOGUE STOCK, 20" BARREL. 308WIN
84203 REMINGTON 700 SPS TACTICAL AAC-SD, GHILLIE GREEN HOGUE STOCK, 20" THREADED BARREL, PILLAR BEDDED STOCK. 308WIN
85538 REMINGTON 700 SPS TACTICAL, GHILLIE GREEN HOGUE STOCK, 16.5" TREADED BARREL. . 308WIN

Specs:

Compare
Full Specs Caliber /Average Weight (lbs.) /Barrel Length (in.) /Overall Length (in.) /Twist /Status /Note Order #

308 Win /7.5 /20" /39 5/8" /12" /New /84207

308 Win /7.3 /20" w/Threaded Muzzle /39 5/8" /10" /New /84203

308 Win /7.5 /16.5w/Threaded Muzzle /36.13" /9" /New /85538

I am leaning towards one of the threaded barrels so I could throw a muzzle break or flash suppressor on it when I feel like it. From what I have read, the shorter the barrel the less velocity I will have. I am not concerned with shooting 600+yards. I will have another rifle for that soon. The price difference is negligible.

So what do CGN'ers think?
What would you do in my shoes?
Is there a benefit for the 9" vs 10" vs 12" rate of twist?
Is there really a noticeable difference between these models? The 84207 is easiest to find, the 85538 is the hardest to find, and the 84203 is somewhere in the middle. If there is no real noticeable difference, I would just buy the 84207.

Thanks for the help and please let me know if I am doing it wrong...this is my first real post.

I just bought the 700 SPS TAC AAC SD 20" version. Bought it from SFRC and it now comes with a muzzle break! I'll find out tomorrow if it makes a big diff. Gonna need to find a crush washer. :p

1:10 will let you shoot heavier bullets. Not sure who has the 16.5" versions in stock.

I bought mine more for long range (ha! in Onterrible, that's like 300yrds if I'm lucky) shooting with the intentions of possibly hunting with it. What others have told me, if it's precision shooting I'm after, I might be somewhat disappointed.

Prophet River has the 84203 in consignment for $600. From what they've been telling me, it's well kept and the owner even kept the original box and manual. I don't think it comes with a muzzle break which might be a new included accessory. What killed it for me was that there was no warranty so I opted to buy a new one from SFRC which came with the brake. Peace of mind warranty and a brake for $130 more.
