I want to buy an sks and get in on some of the cheap shooting opportunities.. I don't know anyuthing about sks rifles. What is the best one to buy? russian,chinese, laminate,hardwood? Any particular russian armoury or year? Who has the best deals right now on rifles and ammo? THANKS.

SKS are everywhere right now. Average about $225. Go for the russian. Most are factory refurbs often sold as new but they're not. Most refurbs have black paint over all bluing as well as bolt and carrier. This is ugly but doesn't affect the gun and can be fixed. All refurbs have laminated stocks. Personally I prefer the laminates. Laminates were installed on new guns starting in late '55 or so until the end of production in russia in 56. Only two armories in Russia, doesn't matter which but many more guns were made in Tula, nice Izzy's are rarer. Doesn't much matter the year tho didn't start chroming the bores till sometime in 1950 I believe so later than that insures chrome bore. If you buy one (and they're great fun) swap out the firing pin for a Murray's and consider getting the trigger assembly tuned. Good luck

Not all refurbs have laminate stocks. I have a birch stock that is a refurb.

Russian: laminate, early 50's. Chinese: wood, any year. the russian sks's are better but the chinese ones are generally cheaper. as for ammo basically every gun store sells it in a case. some smaller independent stores have better prices on the ammo.
