Hey guys, I need to buy scopes to mount on a few of my rifles and I need some help in choosing brand and optics strength . These are all lever actions if that makes a difference.
1) Savage 99 F in .308
2) Winchester 88 in .308
3) Marlin 336 in .35Rem
4) Winchester 94 top eject in 30-30

I know some will say it is a sin to put a scope on lever action, but the old eyes just can't do open sights.
I hunt all game and in all terrain that Alberta has to offer. I am not a long range shooter with the .308's . 200m-300m would be max if I even take it.
I do not want to spend big bucks on each, I was looking at Nikon prostaff 5 , 2.5-10x40
I already have a Leupold FX3 6x on my 30-06 and an old Vortex Diamondback on my .243 which is just ok .
Thanks for your help.

Find some nice old glass for the old timers.
Just picked up an old Weaver C3 at the Lumby show.
May put it on my 336 if it doesn't sell.

Another sweet optic is the Weaver Classic in 4X if yer eyes are up to it.
Very nice clear lenses.
Remarkably clear.

Used Leupold in 2-7x28 or 33 would be a nice low fit.

In my honest opinion, side mounts on the top eject Model 94 are dog ####.

Even with old eyes, you are WAY better off with a receiver mounted peep sight.

My daughter was given a 94 with side mounted scope and I tried to shoot that thing and ripped it off in frustration.

You can't get a cheek weld and look through the scope at the same time so your head kind of wobbles awkwardly to the left trying to see through the scope.

I have to admit that I was with a guy once who successfully shot a deer with his, but I don't like 'em.

I wouldn't tell you not to scope the rifles except the 94. But depending on your budget I would cruise the EE and look for a brace of used Leupold VX3 1.5-5x. They're my favourite scope and are deceptively good at light transmission despite the small objective lens. Anecdotal point, when I hunted in RSA we had a long walk back to camp after playing cat and mouse with a wily old Kudu bull in the thornbush. Anyone who has been over there can attest to the speed with which the sun sets. One minute it's blaring daylight and 5 minutes later you think you've fallen down a well. My PH told me that the area we were hunting (and now blundering through in the dark) held rhino. I turned my scope down to 1.5x and looked through it. I was shocked with the amount of detail and brightness of the scope. I could make out the reticle well enough to shoot if I needed to which was probably better than I could have done with the irons on my rifle. If the scope is bright enough in that situation then I would suggest that it would do just fine under almost any hunting scenario.
