If any of you has been following the Zumbo fiasco, we know what problems this will cause when the antis take hold. It is up to us to start the damage control. With that being said, I heard somthing that bothered me on the radio today. Alberta is initiating another deer cull to try and stop the spread of CWD. I have no problem with this, but they want to "Experiment" with the use of helicopters for shooting deer. My concern is the chance of wounded deer. Wounded deer means suffering. That means when the media takes hold, it will no doubt make everything we do look bad. I figure we have a chance to show the public that we, as hunters care about the well being of the animals we hunt. as well as our respect for humane kills. It may not be enough, but it's a start. I am requesting that you send a quick E-mail to the minister of Enviroment asking to not allow the use of aircraft for the cull. A ground shot is more stable, and humane. If word gets out that we are not just a bunch of blood thirsty, ruthless killers, perhaps a new light may be shed on us. His E-mail address is rob.renner@assembly.ab.ca

This may not make much sense, but i'm sure you get the idea. It will only take a few minutes, and I'm confident that by taking a stand for maintaining our public image, we will be stronger as a group. Thank you very much.

I don't know if the use of Helicopters is such a bad thing in this circumstance Pharoah?
I have never shot from a helicopter but I can't see it being less stable than shooting off-hand... they are pretty smooth and can hover in the air.
The CWD problem is serious and culling is the only way to check the spread of the desease. Hunters are just not killing enough of them... and this needs to be addressed somehow.
What other VIABLE options are there?

They culled a large number last year as well. But with the use of people on the ground. Plus you have a large, noisy aircraft. The deer are not going to stand there and pose, and you can't sneak up on them. They are going to run. I can't see any good coming out of this. I'm just trying to find a front where we can unite in a lobby. When you look at how many lobbies are against us, but so few for us, it's time we do somthing. Just a thought. But I e-mailed him, as I belive this is not a good idea.

I agree with Biggred--helicopters are not such a bad thing. Properly done nobody will even know whats going on and wounding rates are no different than on the ground control methods.

I do have a problem with this whole Idea of culling in the first place. Especially with deer. We have been allowed to use poison with brown rats and still haven't made a dent in the population and they carry some really nasty diseases. CWD is a real problem but please explain to me what causes it or how is it transmitted? Until we know this all efforts at control are just the game departments trying to justify their actions, they seem to have the attitude that we must do something--any thing--even if it doesn't make any difference. Just my opionion.

The deer commission for scotland used them to drive a herd or 3 towards a line of riflemen last year, it caused uproar in the shooting press!

Depending on the conditions on the ground, loose powder snow could cause a problem . Get those lazy hunters in the woods:D ;)

Not a problem. remember, this is the only place in the world where you can watch your dog run away for two days. :D As I see it, there are enough hunters that would be willing to harvest additional animals. Alot of us never got drawn for anything last year. How is that helping? As for a chopper being as stable as shooting offhand, that's why they call them choppers. They shimy and shake. Imaginge looking through a riflescope driving down washboard. But what Tim said is what I'm saying. I don't mind using them to observe or push. but they expect the deer to stand there and wait to get shot when a helicopter is buzzing around. They will have no choice but to shoot running deer from a vibrating helicopter blowing up snow and dust. And people will know about it. I heard it on CBC radio. I know I'm not the only freak who listens to that. Bear in mind a lot of yuppie type folk listen to it. That's a great image we want, eh? I do feel this is a good place to start. look at it this way. Mr. Zumbo spoke his mind. The shooting world reacted. In a matter of days, anger brought him to his knees. Imagine what we could do if we stood together, without the anger pushing us. We have already demonstrated we can move mountains united. We shouldn't just let this slip away. We can change the public opinion, making ourselves as good people. not ruthless killers. Look at everything we have gone through in recent years. Registration and confiscation. Cancling of the Alberta Grizzly Bear hunt. Ontario's spring bear hunt. This is just the begining. If these lobby groups can change the Government's views, simply by speaking up, so can we. But we need to start somewhere. I'm willing, but I can't do it alone.

How bad was the blowing snow Tim?:D ;)
It was last year before the snow was due to complete the red stag cull.
It was all about numbers and the estates not taking enough deer. I suppose even with a staff of 10 190 bucks or stags seems easy until you realise that might be over 100 000 acres most of them hilly ones!
p.s. it does snow properly in scotland!

It is done in New Zealand or used to be and also in Australia but most of the carcasses are left as unaccessible or so I was told by some reasonably reliable mates!

Ever shot from a helecopter before? They are friggen rattle traps. No such thing as smoothe ride. They vibrate way too much to shoot from, except maybe a minimi door gun!

We used to do Eagle patrols in the little scout helicopters, good fun but a nightmare to shoot from we were expected to deploy to the deck and then engage.

The environment minister isn't responsible for Wildlife issues. You want to be sending your e-mails to Ted Morton, SRD minister.

I don't suppose thay could team up with CF, to get those soldiers some training? I much dislike to see a deer suffering useless, but if they'd put these two things together.... First two weeks - hunters with a reward / head (if sick - money... if not - the meat and less money) and then .... CF choppers, I think it will be swift. My 2c, not meaning to aggravate anyone .

I figure he was as good as anybody. As Minister of the enviroment, he will have the access and power to foward to who's responsible. And the idea of training the Canadian Forces, great idea. tell them that. And thank you for everyone's support.
