As the thread title says, I screwed up reassembling my 22/45. When I went to close the mainspring housing there was no pressure on it, when I went to re-open the mainspring housing it would not re-open. It will only open about a 1/2 inch at the bottom and will not swing free like it's supposed to. I'd prefer to not damage the gun, but I don't know how to go about getting it open without damaging whatever it's hung up on. My guess is it's that hammer strut that's supposed to hang down.
Any tips?

Do not panic ... Read this thread ...

At the end of that thread is and after you get your hammer to drop and reassemble your 22/45 .. Tahe a min to look at that cheese dingleberry you tube video and you will never have a problem again ..

The trick that is explained is holding the gun barrel down with the trigger pressed either smack the back of the bolt with a RUBBER hammer or bang the front of the barrel on a piece of wood till you hear the hammer drop forward .. Then the clip will open ... Sort of creeps one out a bit with a new gun, but they are built to take it ....

and don't worry, you won't damage the bolt with the rubber hammer, I have the Mark III, have to do it each time, even to push it back sometimes....rubber hammer also for removing the barrel from the frame...

I have fired probably 5000 rounds through my 22/45, and have only disassembled it ONCE. After about 100 rounds, I got all ambitious, and disassembled. It took about 5 minutes. Cleaned everythign up real nice, deburred everything, and put it back together. Re-assembly took about 6 hours of fumbling/anxiety/crying/praying.... I haven't taken it apart since. I now know how to reassemble it REALLY well. I just won't. I $5 can of non chlorinated brake cleaner is worth far more than the trouble.

Thanks everyone. Rocor98's tip worked out. I got it properly re assembled and functioning. Now to get it out to the range tonight.

Ruger has updated their re-assembly video recently, so now, even Ontarians can put these back together.;):sok2

I kid, I kid...

But really, even the included manual will get it back together properly. You just have to follow every step exactly as directed. Biggest mistake I've seen is not HOLDING the trigger down while pointing upward.

It's difficult enough getting that damn pin up through the bolt and out the top,but then to discover you have no tension on the mainspring housing really pisses you off.I now find if I hold the pistol up side down I can usually get that little dangling arm where it's supposed to go...I agree with mwjones..Just clean it as best you can and shoot away as long as it functions well and save yourself some grief..

I disassemble my MK III each time I get back from the shooting range with an average of 600-800 rounds each time, it's not so bad at all, do it each time and your MK will stay as if it was brand new, and also...you will acquire ability to take apart your gun, just learn how the parts are interact with each other when re-assemble, go yutube....you will find good videos...

I agree, clean it each time you shoot and eventually (3rd time for me) it'll start to become easy. Ignoring cleaning your pistol is kind of a head in the sand approach. You gotta do it, so do it. It really isn't that hard.

For those in the thread .. You can google ruger mark III or 22/45 speed strip .. An after market product marketed by the designer to allow for the easy removability of the bolt for cleaning with out full disassembly ..

You tube coverage .. Looks like some larger retailers carry it .. I like swinging a rubber hammer and puzzles now and then so not my cup of tea , but for others if you can change a slip pin ( ad copy says it is easy and 15 min work ) may be the ticket ...

I would e-mail the designer and ask if it stands up to constant CCI stinger use or other hyper velocity ammo if that is usually what you run through your Ruger ..
