Hi everyone

This started with looking for bait. So my daughter and I pick up 10, 25kg bags of oats, again I dont know how many I'll need. We dump 6 of them 75 yds from the Double Bull Matrix 360Blind in the field...we watch deer walk all over the place...then we see 2 does and 2 fawns on our left within 75 yds and right behind them a buck...I saw him 2 wks ago and he became my goal for the yr.

I took my friends wife out hunting on Tuesday and we had an opportunity at him but it did not work out after a long stock across an open field. Wednesday Morning same field, even longer stock, only a lot freakin colder, again it did not work out. Tonight at 5:00 he steps out behind these does and presents a shot at 75 yds...

One thing does confuse me...his body was rather small and he has no teeth left in his mouth...to me looks like an old warrior as his left ear is actually split 5 inches or so...

Ohhh I called my landowner and he said 1/3 of the oats are gone...at least the rest of the deer ate well last night.

You did the old boy a favor. He probably had a lot of mass last year or the year before.

2 wks ago he looked like he was 300 - 350lbs live weight, just a hog. I actually got to watch him breed 5 nights ago. Last night his ham roast looked like saw dust...no fat anywhere inside or out, even on his skull after we cut his horns out we noted he had no excess fat...I have permission to hunt an area that has lots of really old deer roaming and this guy was a pig 2 wks ago now he is just a shell of his former self...next year is going to be a real pleasure...

...

Nice buck! How long between dropping the oats and seeing deer?? Or did they frequent the area, just more so once you put out the oats?

I was just trying to get the deer to come within shooting distance of my blind...the small area I hunt holds about 60 doe and fawns and at least 10 different mature 4 & 5 yr old bucks, a couple drop tines and 1 with stickers, not including the 2yr olds who think they are studs...lol. After last night there is one fewer old buck...he had lots of excess skin and big slump in his back and looked like he had a double chin...I read in an article about aging Whitetail that his characteristics could mean he was over 8 yrs old...if thats the case...I cant wait till next year... ;-)

I visited the oats this AM and of the 330lbs I out out they had eaten about 1/3 already...even with a gut pile not 50yds away...
