Some range days are better than others. And today was a very good one indeed, one I won't soon forget.
I took the day off today to get away and spend a bit of time working on accuracy with my revolvers.
I'm glad I happened to chose today, because a very kind CGN gunnut who was also there graciously offered me the chance to try some remarkable pistols that were definitely bucket-list check-worthy. Perhaps as a relative newbie I'm easily impressed, but I was very grateful to have the opportunity to try the following:
- a long-barreled original Luger from 1917 (wow!)
- a war-time Walther P38 (so sweet!!)
- a 1911 chambered in .50AE (WTF? Not a Desert Eagle for sure!)
- a bonafide .44 AutoMag <mic drop>
The Luger and the Walther at 100yrs and 60+yrs old made me look more accuate that I was, and the AutoMag felt better than the S&W 29s I've tried (and my .357s are 27-2s so I'm familiar with the frame). I'm not sure where the .50AE went exactly, but it was awesome.
These are the stuff of legend from the golden days of my childhood, the kinds of history and movie guns I never thought I'd see in person let alone actually shoot. So what a treat to meet a friendly fellow nut who chose to share these treasures and give me a chance to try them out. And between mags we enjoyed much good banter and conversation the kind of which I don't get in my "normal" non-firearms life.
These are the moments that reconfirm that my decision to finally get my RPAL a few years ago was a good one.
These are the moments that remind me of what a quality community this is, and how fortunate I feel to have become a member of it.
Thank you kind fellow nut, you really made my day off! I hope we meet again sometime soon to share more conversation over a few magazines…
