Some range days are better than others. And today was a very good one indeed, one I won't soon forget.

I took the day off today to get away and spend a bit of time working on accuracy with my revolvers.

I'm glad I happened to chose today, because a very kind CGN gunnut who was also there graciously offered me the chance to try some remarkable pistols that were definitely bucket-list check-worthy. Perhaps as a relative newbie I'm easily impressed, but I was very grateful to have the opportunity to try the following:

- a long-barreled original Luger from 1917 (wow!)
- a war-time Walther P38 (so sweet!!)
- a 1911 chambered in .50AE (WTF? Not a Desert Eagle for sure!)
- a bonafide .44 AutoMag <mic drop>

The Luger and the Walther at 100yrs and 60+yrs old made me look more accuate that I was, and the AutoMag felt better than the S&W 29s I've tried (and my .357s are 27-2s so I'm familiar with the frame). I'm not sure where the .50AE went exactly, but it was awesome. :d

These are the stuff of legend from the golden days of my childhood, the kinds of history and movie guns I never thought I'd see in person let alone actually shoot. So what a treat to meet a friendly fellow nut who chose to share these treasures and give me a chance to try them out. And between mags we enjoyed much good banter and conversation the kind of which I don't get in my "normal" non-firearms life.

These are the moments that reconfirm that my decision to finally get my RPAL a few years ago was a good one.

These are the moments that remind me of what a quality community this is, and how fortunate I feel to have become a member of it.

Thank you kind fellow nut, you really made my day off! I hope we meet again sometime soon to share more conversation over a few magazines… :)

Trivia time: The actor who plays Harry's friend in the clip above shows up in a couple "Dirty Harry" movies. Most notably, he is the same one who robs a bank in the beginning of "Dirty Harry" when Clint gives his famous "Did he fire 6 shots or only 5?" monologue

BTW, sounds like a fun day at the range.

His Name was Albert Popwell and he was 4 of the 5 Dirty Harry Movies, playing a different character in each one

Dirty Harry - Bank Robber
Magnum Force - Pimp
The Enforcer - Mustapha
Sudden Impact - Horace King

Reminds me to thank all the generous souls who own the pieces that make us all drool. My first day at the my range. Dude let me tey his .50BMG bolt. Gawd damn that memory is burned into my brains.

All praise be to these kind souls. Turning forearms enthusiasts into gunnutz one at a time.

I've wanted one of these for a very long time, but as you all know very rare. Since I've been a member on CGN I've seen just 1 for sale on the EE, that's it.

There's been two - OP glad you got to try one....what'd you think? Did you hit anything with it?

As a relative newbie I have limited experience to compare it to, but I regularly shoot .357mag and have had the opportunity to try .50AE in Desert Eagles (and the big above-mentioned 1911) and .44mag in Model 29s. I have not tried .454 Casull or any other big wheelguns.

I shot the AutoMag twice and found it surprisingly manageable as the recoil was less than expected. I didn't get any bullseyes but I was well within the circle, which surprised me. My overall impression was that it felt a lot more usable and 'practical' than I would've guessed, something that one could take out and enjoy shooting with a mind to target precision as opposed to an occasional blaster that's kept primarily for the novelty / movie coolness factor (which the AutoMag also had in spades, it scored very high on the cool factor).

The Luger, Walther and 1911 were all pretty darn cool as well! I put several magazines through the Walther and it felt like a modern pistol (except for the mag release that took some getting used to). Definitely a few bulls with the Walther.

The Luger was elegant and shot very nicely. What a beauty!!

And the 1911 was basically what you'd get if Chuck Norris turned into a 1911.

Me too.... and it went super fast. I would have bought it if I was fast enough! I check in pretty frequently with my phone but still missed it, to get the good stuff here on the ee you have to be watching all the time.
