Don't ask me how I did it, brand new 14" noremincoton 870, and before I finished 60 shells of birdshot (5&6) the front sight was gone. I found it later, by magic, right near my guncases 10' behind me.

It screws back in, but clearly can't be trusted, and I can feel it a little bit inside the barrel, so I guess maybe a pellet just popped it out. (why I wear safety glasses!)

Since I can't trust it, what should I replace it with??

happens to all of them....

you're probably one of the few to find it though :D

screw it back with some lock tite, or something to hold it with.

Might also be a good opportunity to change sights, the 14" barrel looks great with a full rail, rifle sights or Wilson Cambats ;)

My friend's Norinco 870's sight fell off too. His 870 Marine Magnum bead sight is intact.
Other than that he says it's as reliable.
I'm shocked it was only with birdshot.

Ike I don't know how to put any of those sights on it. Can it really be done?

Geologist, it shot fine. I read so much about 12ga shotguns I was expecting something punishing, but it was very very tame. 14" cylinder bore and synthetic furniture would make it lighter and kick harder, but it was fine. To be honest, when I was shooting my 30-30 that kicked probbly twice as hard (or it's the hard butt-plate).

At about 12m #6 patterned 15" and the center of the pattern was 3" high. Also it seemed like every shot was slightly 1/2" to the left, but could be my sight misalignment. #5 patterned 15" between 15 & 20m, but shot 4-4.5" high. My only measuring reference was the 25m marker further down, so I had to guess the distances.

There were a few problems extracting, maybe 5/60 shells I really had to work to get them out. Also I was disappointed to see there was a plug in the magazine, so I have to take that out. But with a 3-round magazine I was trying that 'shoot one load one' technique, and wonder if the correct way is to toss the chell straight into the chamber?

The 'correct' way to fully load an 870 is to open the action, drop a shell in the opening, rack the slide forward (chambering a shell) and then flip it over and fill the tube.

Unless you're hunting migratory birds, you can ditch the plug inside and make the tube hold 4 shells.

If you want recoil out of the 14", try shooting some 3" slugs. BOOOOM.

Yes but require either drill and tap installation (Wilson/Scattergun) or silver solder/brazing and rebluing (gunsmith)

To load an empty gun with action open, just get the round into the ejection port, don't worry about trying to push it into the chamber or anything like that..if it gets into the ejection port facing forward it will go into the chamber when you close the action. You don't have to cant the gun either.
You can load with your hand going overtop or from underneath the receiver depending on what you prefer, but if you fumble and drop a round it is better to have your hand underneath so you can catch it. This is one area where lefties have an advantage since I can see the ejection port in my peripheral vision if I leave the gun on the shoulder.
Cheers

What is the fit and finnish like on these norincos compared to the 870 express line of shotguns? I am very interested in these little 14" ones, pretty cool stuff.

Thanks.

Excellent commentary on emergency loading Ike. Sounds like you have "combat shotgun" training.

I've got nothing to compare them to, but fit and finish seems fine to me. I wouldn't want one that's too pretty, anyway. There's a little tripod-type hole in the toe of the stock that I don't really understand.

One concern was that my left hand did slip forward a couple times, so I've got to be very conscious of that, or put some skateboard tape on the slide.

P.S. thanks for the description Ike. I'm curious about sighting, it seems like a pretty good gun to shoot with both eye's open, there's no confusion like with a pistol. Is that just me and my lazy eye, and do you keep the sights on the target while loading, and emergency reloading?

For a sling swivel mount perhaps?

Also who is selling these, and for how much?

Everything I have read, seen, and heard about says yes, keep your eyes on your target even when reloading.

Who is selling these shotguns, and for how much?
and do they come with chokes?

I shoot with both eyes open as I am doing combat/defence style shooting. Position of the gun during a reload depends on several factors and there is no 'one right way' to reload for all situations. One nice thing about the short barrelled 870 is that it is easier in a static situation to 'combat load' (as that type is called by some) with the gun in firing position than with a longer barreled gun. There may be times when this is advantagous if done properly.

But what if one does not load it like that? It makes no diff does it?
